Religions infect humans in order to brand their territory. The method? Religions give men incentives to be violent - women, wealth, power, jobs, land etc. Infected by ideology, humans turn into zombies. The result? Human rights don't apply to zombies. For 8 bn humans spread out over 510 m sq km of land, the idea of one God, one religion is as violent as the idea of one currency, one bank, one political system, one economic ideology, one way of living. "Civilization" is the superiority of non-violence/अहिंसा over violence/हिंसा. We may disagree on any other definition but we can't deny this one. Mahavir defined violence as the "need to be recognised". This need is violence because it requires others to shrink in order to make space for the person wanting to be recognised. Shopkeepers displaying their goods to catch the passers by's attention, advertisements trying to force ideas into us, content on our social media feeds trying to influence us - we live in a violent world and the more we live in it, the more we must participate in violence.

Pakistan’s history has been a continuous fight to stand tall through every challenge. With economic uncertainty and political shifts today, it’s easy to feel the weight of the times. But if there's one thing we know, it’s how to keep moving forward. This Independence Day, let's remind ourselves our strength lies in hope, and in that stubborn refusal to give up, no matter the odds.
