🚨💜✊ Urgent action to prevent and eliminate femicides Gender-based violence against women and girls and its most extreme manifestation —femicides, feminicides or gender-related killings of women and girls— are a dramatic illustration of the persistent structural challenges of gender inequality that affect women and girls in Latin America and the Caribbean. Bulletin No. 3 on feminicidal violence presents the official statistics submitted by the region’s countries to the Gender Equality Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean on cases of femicides, feminicides and gender-related killings of women reported in 2023. This bulletin is part of the UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women campaign of the Secretary General of the United Nations, aimed at preventing and eliminating gender-based violence against women and girls worldwide. The campaign calls on governments, civil society organizations, women’s organizations, youth, the private sector, the media and the entire United Nations system to join forces and tackle the global pandemic of violence against women and girls. https://lnkd.in/gVhVRCEr #NotOneMore #EndFemicide #ECLAC #LatinAmericaAndTheCaribbean #UnitedNations #PublicacionesdelaCEPAL

This month, we observe 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence; which began on Nov 25 with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and will culminate with #HumanRightsDay on Dec 10. "These two markers symbolize what we know to be true: achieving gender equality is not possible without addressing gender-based violence, a human rights abuse that holds back women and girls from fully and safely participating in social, economic and political life." The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual global campaign dedicated to raising awareness and driving action to end violence against women and girls. Taking place from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day), this period underscores the urgent need to combat gender-based violence while linking the cause to the broader framework of human rights. The campaign is a powerful call to action, urging individuals, communities, and governments worldwide to unite to promote gender equality, safety, and dignity for all. During this campaign, we will spotlight the stories of resilience and struggle from women across the MENA region, highlighting their fight against systemic violence, discrimination, and inequality. These stories will not only amplify the voices of women who have courageously faced these challenges but also serve as an apparent demand for action. Gender-based violence must end, and the rights and safety of women and girls must be prioritized. It is time to move beyond dialogue and commit to meaningful change. We must hold regimes accountable and work collectively to create a future where every woman and girl can live free from fear and harm. #16DaysOfActivism #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #GenderEquality #StopGBV #HumanRightsForAll #WomenRightsMatter #MENAStories #HerFightHerRights #BreakTheSilence #TogetherForEquality #SayNoToViolence #EmpowerWomen #SafetyAndDignity #JusticeForWomen #FreedomFromFear

📊 What Do EU Citizens Think About Gender-Based Violence? The latest #Eurobarometer survey shows that most people in the EU overwhelmingly reject gender-based violence. 82% are against men catcalling women, 92% against male partners occasionally slapping their wife or girlfriend, and 78% against men making suggestive comments about a female colleague's appearance at work. This data provides a vital perspective, complementing the findings from our recent Gender-Based Violence Survey (Eurostat, European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, European Institute for Gender Equality), which highlights the lived experiences of women across the EU. 🔗 Dive into the findings and join the discussion: https://lnkd.in/dxg3YX2t Let’s turn insights into action and get to zero acceptance. 💬 #GenderBasedViolence #GenderEquality #EUAttitudes

By challenging racism and gender inequality together, we understand there is more than just one thing that leads to violence against women. We show that racism, discrimination, and the ongoing impacts of colonisation lead to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women experiencing violence at an even higher rate than non-Indigenous women. We reject racist myths and stereotypes that excuse, trivialise and downplay violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. By challenging racism and gender equality together, we help change the story of violence against women. Reference: Our Watch. 2018. Breaking the Silence: 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, observed from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day), is a global campaign to challenge violence against women and girls. This year’s focus is a powerful reminder: violence against women is not only a grave violation of human rights but also an issue that demands urgent action. Ending violence against women is possible but requires collective commitment. Governments, organizations, and individuals must ensure adequate funding for prevention and support services, strengthen legal protections, and promote gender equality. It’s time to amplify the voices of survivors and foster communities where women and girls feel safe and valued. This campaign is not just a moment it is a movement. As youths we all should stand against gender-based violence, now and always. #16daysofactivism #networkofactiveyouth #youthnetwork

After my day commitments, I tune into keeping active on my other passions and expertise, on the causes I care about & support, and the changes I wish to see in the world, one step at a time! 💪 And just yesterday has come the celebration of a significant milestone: First ever EU rules on combatting violence against #women. Yes, first ever! This means the EU has finally united in recognising the pervasive & systematic nature of #genderbasedviolence and its devastating consequences for individuals and society as a whole. ✨ Such an achievement owes a lot to the incredible courage of every woman who has chosen to #standup and report incidents of harassment & violence. Despite knowing the potential pushbacks, these women have bravely spoken out, defying norms and driving meaningful change. 👏 These women have pushed along many changes: creation of trainings for every space and every community to prevent any form of violence on women, paving the way for the production and implementation of policies & processes that lead in exemplary ways of addressing such cases. 💡This is a significant step in defining #genderequality as the fundamental principle for preventing such forms of violence & dealing with its root causes such as #discrimination and #powerdymanic. Such a reaffirmation of a collective commitment to creating a safer and more equitable society for all. 💪 Let's celebrate and continue to advocate for policies & practices that uphold gender equality and safety at every space. 💫 There is still a long way to go and together, regardless of our #gender , we can move faster and achieve higher! #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #GenderEquality #EURegulations

We’re proud to join the #SVRIForum2024, the world’s largest research conferences dedicated to ending violence against women (VAW). This forum is a unique opportunity for researchers, policymakers, funders, and advocates to come together and align strategies for tackling violence and advancing gender equality worldwide. As we face increasing challenges—such as the backlash against women’s rights, risks from armed conflict, climate change, and technology-facilitated gender-based violence—collaborative efforts are more critical than ever. At SVRI, UN Women aims to strengthen coordination with key stakeholders to ensure that our actions are data-driven, evidence-based, and effectively address the needs of women and girls.
