In an age where technology shapes our lives more than ever, how can we protect our democracy? 🤔 Marietje Schaake, a former Member of the European Parliament and Fellow at Stanford University's Cyber Policy Center and the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, explores what she believes is one of the most urgent challenges of our time: the erosion of our own democratic institutions. In this thrilling conversation, Schaake discusses the strategies outlined in her new book, 'The Tech Coup: How to Save Democracy from Silicon Valley,' on how to reclaim democratic control in the digital age. Some 25 years ago, my postdoc advisor Ted Adelson told me that some of his best ideas came when he was playing around in Photoshop. He was right. As I was just starting my first faculty job in 1999 I used Photoshop to splice the head of a tennis buddy onto the body of tennis great Andre Agassi. As I did this, I realized that the resulting fake image would leave behind a specific artifact because of the way I resized the head to fit the body. This simple observation led me on a 25 year journey of thinking about how to detect manipulated content. While 10 years ago this would have been considered a niche field, today, with the rise of generative AI and deepfakes, determining the integrity of content has taken on a more urgent need. Working with an amazing group of digital forensic researchers and cybersecurity experts and after two years of building solutions to detect all forms of manipulated media, we are launching GetReal Labs with a mission to protect organizations worldwide from the threats posed by the malicious use of manipulated and synthetic information. Hello, Everyone 🌟 I'm thrilled to share a recent personal project where I fine-tuned an AI model with extensive cybersecurity knowledge using Llama-3 model and Unsloth libraries. Initially, the model I fine-tuned was restricted and wouldn’t address questions about vulnerabilities. So, I moved to an uncensored model which was cognitivecomputations/dolphin-2.9-llama3-8b, and utilized a variety of advanced and basic cybersecurity datasets for fine-tuning. I then explored running this model locally without internet dependency, similar to how models run on Ollama. By quantizing the model to the gguf Q_3 format, I successfully ran it on my machine! 🚀 If you’re interested in experimenting with this yourself, here’s the link. https://lnkd.in/d6WhVg8z #AI #Cybersecurity #MachineLearning #LLM #TechInnovation #OpenSource

Extremely excited to see Hany Farid launch his company, GetReal Labs. Hany and I have spent many years together discussing the merits and drawbacks of both 'Media Provenance' and 'Detection'. What's for certain is that the digital media ecosystem has forever changed, and we need all of the intellectual horsepower possible to restore trust in visual media. Provenance & Detection can work in tandem to create spectacular results for enterprise. As Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) markers/signals start to permeate the ecosystem thanks to adoption from OpenAI, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Adobe, Meta, Qualcomm and many others - we will enhance downstream visibility for detection systems. And, for all of the bad actors that create fake media with malintent - Hany and company will be there to help detect. The 'authenticity' category is continuing to accelerate at a rapid rate, which is incredibly encouraging for the ecosystem! SO much exciting work to come.
