Innovative solution: Repurposing rubber for playgrounds and sports fields. Rubber waste, from old tyres to deteriorated conveyor belts, poses a significant landfill challenge. Not only does rubber release methane gas when exposed to sunlight, but incinerating it for energy production also creates harmful emissions. At WastePlan, we saw an opportunity to turn this waste into something valuable. By collaborating with manufacturers, we shred these rubber products, separate the rubber from metal threads, and colour the crumbs. These vibrant, hard-wearing crumbs are then used to create bouncy surfaces for kids’ playgrounds and sports fields. This solution not only diverts rubber waste from landfills but also provides safe and sustainable surfaces for children and athletes to enjoy.
