The educator shortage is real, and it is having a real impact on students, families, communities, and on the many educators that remain in the profession. Across Illinois, amazing work is being done to address this shortage with amazing programs focused on the educator pipeline. For example, the NIU College of Education not only has its own PLEDGE programs, but also partners with Golden Apple Foundation and GROW YOUR OWN ILLINOIS. At the same time, we know that to really solve the educator shortage, we also need to significantly change what is taking place with retention, and with KEEP Illinois, we want to do more than retain educators! We want to create environments, systems, and policies that foster growth and allow educators to flourish throughout their careers. Read this report that we released this past week (or watch the short video), and join us as we move to action to address educator engagement! https://lnkd.in/gMi4K3zV

Let's set the record straight! 💪🏾 Back to school is a time for new beginnings and opportunities, but some voices are spreading myths about charter schools and privatization. 🎒 Charter Schools are NOT about privatization - they're about innovation and giving parents the choice to find the best educational fit for their children. Charter schools ARE designed to meet the diverse needs of students, offering specialized programs and flexible learning environments that traditional public schools might not provide. 🌟 In Houston and beyond, charter schools are making a positive impact by providing quality education, increasing graduation rates, and preparing students for successful futures. Instead of tearing down these opportunities, let's focus on how we can support all schools in providing the best education possible for every child. 📚 Let’s work together to ensure that every child, regardless of their background, has access to a high-quality education that meets their needs. 🏫✨

National Civics Day is a perfect moment to reflect on the roles that keep our communities running, especially during an election year. In "When You Grow Up to Vote," part of our RedThread Literacy Program Grade 3 curriculum, Eleanor Roosevelt explains how firefighters, police officers, and garbage collectors serve the public every day. These essential roles remind us that government jobs, especially at the local level, are designed to protect and care for us. This lesson becomes even more meaningful during an election year when voters decide who will lead and manage these vital services. Our curriculum encourages students to connect what they learn with real-world situations—like writing a letter to a policymaker to solve an issue and organizing a class election. Civic responsibility starts early and teaches kids that the choices we make impact the services that keep our communities running.

Back to where it all began! 🛫🚊🚗 Today, the entire Leading Educators team is traveling from across the country to New Orleans—our organization's birthplace—for three days of deep learning, connection, and planning toward the bright future we believe every student deserves. Families send students to school with hopes of what their children will learn and who they will become. Together, we're working to ensure that our nation’s educators have the support systems to rise to those expectations in the face of tightening resources, rapidly shifting workforce needs, and societal changes. At this critical moment, we're determined to help school systems leverage research on how students learn, what teachers need to excel, and how systems improve to make strategic shifts and get life-changing results. 🌱 When teachers learn, students learn.

At the The Inspired Teaching Demonstration School in Washington, D.C., teacher Brie Wattier is piloting a course aimed at helping 8th graders evaluate the credibility of social media posts and AI-generated content. As part of the University of Maryland’s “digital civic inquiry” curriculum, this class equips students with tools like “lateral reading” to verify information across multiple sources. 📚 For instance, students explored affordable housing through varied sources, distinguishing credible experts from those with vested interests. While they’ve quickly embraced techniques like lateral reading, challenges remain in identifying subtle biases. 🔍 The course is part of a broader movement, supported by the U.S. Department of Education and organizations like the Close Up Foundation, to embed media literacy and digital citizenship in K-12 education. As the program grows, its ultimate goal is to prepare students—and their teachers—to navigate and critically evaluate the digital information ecosystem effectively.
