Today we announce an investment in subsea HVDC cable manufacturer XLCC to help them to develop a new world-leading factory in Hunterston in Scotland. Once complete, it will have capacity to produce thousands of km each year of HVDC cable, which will be capable of transporting energy over long distances with significantly increased efficiency. The Hunterston factory will create around 900 permanent jobs including more than 200 apprenticeships, meaning the factory is also helping to create the manufacturing skills the country needs to support the growth of the UK as a global hub for offshore wind.  John Flint, #UKIB CEO, said: “Industry projections indicate that demand for subsea cables will soon exceed existing supply chain capacity. Our support for XLCC is intended to provide confidence to the market, crowding private investment into this sector to boost production capacity in an industry set to have a significant impact on the UK‘s transition to #NetZero.” Read more about this deal: https://lnkd.in/ggC-GXWJ

Addressing the Challenges of TVET Technicians and University Graduates: Bridging the Gap to Workplace Experience Recently, I had the privilege of placing a number of TVET Technicians—specialising in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, and other types of Engineering—into companies through a Funded Programme. Part of my role was to collaborate with host companies in developing tailored mentoring and career pathing profiles for each technician/ artisan to support their long-term growth. During my interviews with these highly skilled candidates, a concerning pattern emerged: many struggled to find workplace opportunities. Some had even worked as volunteers, with no compensation, just to gain experience. A common sentiment was that companies are often more inclined to hire university graduates, leaving TVET graduates overlooked. However, as I reflected on these conversations, I realised that this issue isn't unique to TVET graduates. University graduates are also facing similar barriers to gaining workplace experience. The question is: How can we expect graduates from both TVET institutions and Universities to thrive if we’re not providing them with opportunities to gain practical experience? Let’s Shift this Mindset to Unlock Opportunities: South Africa is grappling with a lack of workplace opportunities, yet industries need skilled workers—particularly artisans and engineers. To align with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of job creation, we must focus on breaking down the barriers preventing graduates from entering the workforce. Let’s bridge the gap by: 1. Creating Entry Points: Whether it’s a TVET technician or a university graduate, we must provide meaningful workplace experience opportunities that help them transition from education to employment. 2. Mentoring & Career Pathing: As I’ve seen through my work, structured mentoring programs not only provide guidance but also help young professionals map out clear career growth pathways. 3. Challenge Recruitment Practices: It’s time for companies to reconsider their hiring preferences and recognise the immense value that practical, hands-on training brings to the workforce. Let’s work together to change the narrative. Workplace opportunities aren’t just a challenge we face—they’re a key part of the solution to building a more prosperous future for South Africa. As I reflect on my 6-month internship as a Student aircraft maintenance engineer with the United Nigeria Airlines, I'm reminded of the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the energy and engineering sectors. Growing up in an urban community as Onitsha, I saw firsthand the impact of energy poverty on our daily lives; I really can’t say what happens within some rural settlements but I also saw the resilience and creativity of our people. Rural energy access is a critical aspect of DEI in energy and engineering. As someone who's worked on aircraft systems, I know that reliable energy is essential for powering critical infrastructure. But in many rural communities, energy access is limited, and this disproportionately affects us to the CORE. We need to prioritize decentralized energy solutions, such as solar and wind power, to bridge this energy gap. Gender equity is another crucial aspect of DEI in our sector. As a male engineer, I've seen how women are underrepresented(few) in our field. But I've also seen the incredible impact that women can have when given the opportunity. We need to create more spaces for women to participate in energy and engineering, and to provide them with the support and resources they need to succeed. IEEE PES Diversity, Equity and Inclusion has been making this Work; Kudos! Renewable energy solutions are critical for reducing our carbon footprint and promoting sustainable development. As someone who's passionate about engineering, I believe that we have a responsibility to use our skills to create a better world. I hope to work on that during my final project as a Bioresources engineering Student at Nnamdi Azikiwe University. We need to invest in renewable energy technologies, such as solar and wind power, and to create policies that support their adoption. Let's work together to create a more inclusive and sustainable energy sector. We owe it to ourselves, our communities, and the planet. Perhaps today, after a long negotiation period, another puzzle in the energy transition is being addressed. UK Infrastructure Bank has invested into a key supply chain manufacturing industry that could contribute to interconnectors of the world. If right ingredients by way of policy support come into play in the near future, this will enable a very cost effective solution to long distance subsea transmission projects in the North West European region.

This Post is related to my journey and the few questions that are frequently asked related to my journey for a Master's in Saudi Arabia. I tried to share my experience and views, if I missed anything, please ask me in the comments or message me directly. This post is based on my 11 Months in KSA. Question 1: Is Saudi/ KSA a good choice for studies? Related to Engineering, Yes, Saudi Arabia is a great place to study. The teachers are cooperative and more focused on learning rather than grades. The faculty is mostly 65% Local, 20 % Egyptian, and 15% from other nations. The good thing is that all the teachers have a minimum of Ph.D. holders. Further, in my department, Mechanical Engineering, the teachers already published an average of 20+ research papers or more. So, as a new student, they admire me always. And every teacher is working on more research projects. Takeaways, the environment is more centric towards research which is a great deal for a Master’s Student. Question 2: Language Barrier in University In University or lecture, you don't find any issue with language. All teachers are proficient in English. Outside, you could find little difficulty in communicating. But In Hospitals, Doctors also communicate in English easily. Question 3: Scholarship Yes, I am in a 100% scholarship program, they waived 100% tuition fees, giving a stipend. The accommodation is great/ spacious and inside the university. Total day expense is around if you don’t cook by yourself SAR 4 for Breakfast + SAR 11 for Lunch + SAR 5 for Dinner. They also give return tickets during the summer holidays.
