Radiation and convection losses from your shell-and-tube increase your fuel bills. Shell-and-tube heat exchangers are old technology with several disadvantages. Large temperature approach, big, heavy, low efficiency, prone to fouling and difficult to clean with high hold up volume. Heat losses with heating applications build up over time, even if insulated. Hold up volume of 4m³ shell-and-tube losing 1 °C per hour will cost you €500 per year in radiation losses to atmosphere.

In a thermal recompression system the vapor is compressed by acting on it with high-pressure steam in a jet ejector. This results in more steam than is needed for boiling the solution, so that excess steam must be vented or condensed. The ratio of motive steam to the vapor from the solution depends on the evaporation pressure; for many low-temperature operations, with steam at 8 to 10 atm pressure, the ratio of steam required to the mass of water evaporated is about 0.5.
