Algae treatment plan in works to keep Vancouver Lake swimming open as long-term strategies developed Warm summer days aren’t far away, and neither is the return of Vancouver Lake’s algae bloom. This year may be different, though. “We will be working to develop a beach algae treatment plan … with the goal to complete treatment at the beach to help prevent recreational swim beach closures,” Devan Rostorfer, Clark County Public Works’ Clean Water Division manager, said Friday. Rostorfer said the county has been working closely with Friends of Vancouver Lake and Vancouver Lake Rowing Club on the beach treatment plan. “Implementing a beach treatment plan is really a shorter-term solution that can help ensure the public is able to enjoy Vancouver Lake,” she said, adding that long-term solutions are more difficult to identify and implement and require cooperation between the county, the cities of Vancouver and Ridgefield and others. In 2021, state funding was awarded to the county for the design of a long-term plan to restore and maintain Vancouver Lake’s water quality. The county hired Herrera Environmental Consultants, which worked with other consultants, stakeholders and the public to study historical data, identify goals and objectives, and develop and evaluate management practices before creating a final management plan in August. Rostorfer said the first phase was focused on creating the lake management plan and identifying recommendations for next steps. Now, the county is ready to implement its key recommendations, Rostorfer said. She said the county will work with stakeholders and the technical advisory group to develop a public participation plan. Other work will include how to create special taxing districts to help fund the cleanup. “What’s really exciting is that Friends of Vancouver Lake was successful in securing another legislative proviso for approximately $330,000 for a one-time grant from the Department of Ecology that will be passed through to Clark County to implement a second phase of work,” Rostorfer said. River Lampreys (Lampetra fluviatilis) migrating at Annacotty Weir, Co. Limerick, last night. They can swim up a small part on one side of the weir where there's a leak from a sluice gate. They then enter holes in the stonework, and under the sluice gate, to try to get past the weir. However, the vast majority end up getting trapped here and can't make it upstream. They are heavily predated upon when trapped at this sluice gate and can often be seen partially burrowed into the stonework or under the gate with their tails sticking out. River Lampreys are very poor swimmers and cannot climb like eels or jump like salmon. However, they are not completely incapable of swimming upstream through small inclined slopes when conditions are right. Observations like these are very useful for informing the design of a possible future lamprey pass.

Since 2020, weekly testing for Enterococcus (fecal bacteria indicator) in Dog River revealed a fail rate of nearly 50 percent for a “safe-to-swim” status. Although Dog River is classified by the state as having water quality which is only suitable for the survival of wildlife and not supportive for recreational means, we argue that current and historical use should create a means for a waterbody’s quality to improve and meet actual uses. Dog River is regularly frequented by fishermen, boaters, jet skiers, swimmers, and kayakers. So no matter how often the river supports safe bacteria levels for swimming, we need to make improvements to meet the community’s further needs of this waterway and others in the Bay area. Wading and Swimming pools currently test for Pseudomonas, this is used as a criterion in the regulation of wading and swimming pool hygiene. P. aeruginosa is a valid indicator for recreational water disinfection efficacy. Moreover, P. aeruginosa is important not only in terms of its role as an indicator, but also because Pseudomonas is an opportunistic pathogen whose transmission is often associated with water. The membrane filtration method proceses a sample of 100ml of water, the membrane is then placed on the agar plate.  Pseudomonas colonies develop with an intense blue-green colony colour, clearly visible to the naked eye. The agar is produced from powder, at customer required quantities, by boiling then cooling to 45-50C and pouring into a petri dish. Interested?
