The success of AUKUS is in Australia’s national interest. Its realisation will depend on the Australian community accepting that the benefits of nuclear-powered submarines for our national security outweigh the risks arising from the generation of nuclear and radioactive waste. Demonstrating a safe and secure radioactive waste disposal pathway as soon as practicable will be a key component of gaining community acceptance of AUKUS and support its long-term sustainability. https://lnkd.in/gWfJ7RXq

The Environment Agency is consulting on a review of its time and material charges for implementation in April 2025. The consultation includes proposals related to our radioactive substances regulation work. These are: * to increase the hourly rates for Specified Radioactive Substances Activities, often commonly referred to as Nuclear Time and Materials Charges * new charges for Radiation Emergency Preparedness and Public Information Regulations (REPPIR) where we take part in off-site testing of emergency plans * introducing a new Specified Radioactive Substances Activity to cover our work on nuclear waste disposal You can respond online until 20 January 2025. https://lnkd.in/eGkikYQd #nuclear #radioactivesubstances #industryregulation

Two recent articles are perfect representations of a neoliberal push to deregulate clean energy development with the ultimate consequence of maximising short term profit for developers at the cost of a unsustainable pathway of wind/solar development that causes entirely avoidable local damage and draws even worse community opposition. This piece from Alan Finkel argues biodiversity protections should be slashed and burned to make way for wind and solar that destroys the local environment on the grounds of a "global" biodiversity benefit. This thinking fails to recognise that we don't have to sacrifice the local to help the global - and in fact, the two are complementary. https://lnkd.in/dC4HRu96 The Business Council of Australia, a group that includes several large fossil fuel companies and which has form in opposing good, well-designed climate policy (it once described a weak 45% by 2030 target as "economy wrecking") makes a similar bunch of arguments: the only possible pathway for past wind and solar growth is through environmental destruction. https://lnkd.in/deeNNd8Y As it does in the US, calls to deregulate infrastructure development and allow railroading and fast-tracking are extremely short-sighted, and have the dual effect of also speeding up new fossil fuel projects while increasing hate, friction and opposition to destructive, corporate-driven clean power projects. We have to be thinking here decades-long development, not the next few months. False dichotomies have incredible destructive power in ensuring we fail to imagine pathways that are both fast and environmentally/socially sustainable. This Roosevelt Institute report is a fantastic progressive take on permitting reform; one that puts forward a plan that prioritises the long road of energy system transformation, not the next quarterly report for shareholders.: https://lnkd.in/dD6U5G9Q

When you look at Trump’s first term, the clean energy industry really found its own during Trump 1. Right? And so my sense is that the deployment of clean technology is going to keep going. I think the real question is what our leadership looks like around the world. And even there, I would say that people are continuing to clamor for American technology in #geothermal, in nuclear, in some of these other areas. https://lnkd.in/ejvvDQ2S

What we're seeing in Labor's environmental and climate actions is a total breakdown in any commitment to a sustainable future. In fact, we're seeing complete capitulation to the gas and coal industries. Accompanying spin by the government is attempting to hide reality behind a wall of miniscule "achievements" that are so inconsequential they are laughable ie. building back tiny sections of the Great Barrier Reef that will die in the next bleaching. I saw a gas advert on SBS last night that brazenly used the words "renewable gas", a statement that defies reality. When gas burns its gone, it's a physical impossibility for it to renew itself. How that advert got on SBS is all about money not physics While biodiversity loss is increasing at an alarming rate (eg. massively increased coral die off) our governments, with the support of many extractive industries, are ramping up propaganda about what they are doing for the environment and climate change. As an environmental lobbyist in a previous time I've seen how this works: it's called "rub my back and I'll rub yours"! In those days the costs were low and there was no social media. People Power was influential. But the stakes, and money, are much higher these days. The innocence has gone and the game has turned filthy. Huge corporations can pour vast amounts of money into advertising and lobbying that rubs the politicians backs and leaves us environmentalists stranded in the backwaters. The only way we can bring about change is by acting together, by calling out the lies over and over again, and not caving in. Everything you do to reverse this trend makes a difference. https://lnkd.in/gMjDCh6h
