The R&A in association with The British Golf Collectors Society are hosting a conference on ‘Making the Most of Your Golf Club’s Heritage’, to be held at St. Andrews next March. The two day conference will consider topics such as: Acquisition, Display & Cataloguing Collections; Disaster Recovery & Conservation; Valuing Collections; Insurance Considerations; and History Use & Communication. This is a very welcome game-changing initiative, directed at all golf club managers/secretaries, which has been prompted by a growing number of golf clubs taking a more in depth interest in their heritage and associated memorabilia, but who are unsure on how to best move forward with the most beneficial practices. It should also create awareness of the significance of each club’s heritage, within those golf clubs that thus far have not looked too closely at the advantages of promoting their collections and bringing out the story of their history. As a long time appraiser & valuer of golf clubhouse trophy & memorabilia collections, in my experience, it is generally the clubs which are recognised as having the longest and most significant history, that take their heritage most seriously. However, each and every club’s history is as important as the next, regardless of how long or short and should be celebrated with equal gusto.

Proud to be part of an industry that generates jobs, commerce, economic development and tax revenues to communities across the nation. Proud to champion an industry that promotes a physical, active lifestyle and positive mental health. According to the American Golf Industry Coalition's latest Golf Impact Report, golf impacts nearly two million Americans whose livelihoods directly or indirectly depend on it. The total economic impact of golf in America is estimated at $102 billion, serving 45 million golfers (11% of the U.S. population) and impacts 1.65 million jobs across the country. We spent last week at our Nation's Capital telling this story to congressional leaders and policy-makers as part of the 16th Annual National Golf Day. If you're not an active member of the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) you're not seeing the full picture. NGCOA Members are among the most thoughtful and successful golf course owners and operators in the business. Join us, it just makes sense. https://lnkd.in/gC4EDyqX

The trend of millennials moving to private golf communities, once unlikely due to declining interest in the sport among younger generations, is on the rise. This surprising shift gained momentum during the pandemic, with the National Golf Foundation reporting a record number of rounds played in 2023. Trending with this growing demand, Saltleaf Golf Preserve by London Bay has introduced an all-new public course in Bonita Springs, just a short drive from one of the country's golfing capitals: Naples, FL. Fully reimagined from its members-only roots as Raptor Bay Golf Club, Saltleaf Golf Preserve offers a public play, daily fee model, welcoming golfers of all ages to enjoy not just one, but two courses. While there, players experience the allure of the surrounding Saltleaf community, which includes a marina, nature trails, and 224 luxury condominiums at The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Estero Bay. Could golf be the key to driving residential sales in the neighborhood? Keep reading The Wall Street Journal below:

Take control of your destiny
Meet Bill Powell, a true trailblazer in golf history. Denied access to play on white-owned courses, he took matters into his own hands. From segregation to success, he built his dream course on 78 acres, paving the way for inclusivity in golf. 🏌️♂️⛳️ Details in comments 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽 https://lnkd.in/epryPYkT William James Powell (November 22, 1916 – December 31, 2009) was an American businessman, entrepreneur, and pioneering golf course owner who designed the Clearview Golf Club, the first integrated golf course, as well as the first to cater to African-American golfers. He was also the first African American to design, construct and own a professional golf course in the United States. Powell was fond of saying "The only color that matters is the color of the greens". Powell was the grandson of Alabama slaves and was born in Greenville, Alabama. During his youth, Powell moved with his family to Minerva, Ohio. In high school there, he played golf and football. Later, at the state's historically African-American Wilberforce University, he played on the golf team. After serving in the United States Army Air Forces in World War II in England, he returned to the Canton, Ohio-area near Minerva in 1946, and began work first as a janitor and later as a security guard for the Timken bearing and steel company. Due to racial segregation,[2] he was banned from all-white public golf courses and was rejected for a bank loan to try to build his own. With financing from two African-American doctors and a loan from his brother, Powell bought a 78-acre (320,000 m2) dairy farm in East Canton, Ohio, and with his wife, Marcella, did most of the landscaping by hand. Two years later, in 1948, he opened the integrated Clearview Golf Club. In 1978, he expanded the course to 18 holes and earned a national-historic-site designation in 2001. As of the 2000s (decade), Clearview was the only course in the United States designed, constructed, owned and operated by an African American. Powell died in Canton, Ohio, on New Year's Eve, 2009, following complications from a stroke. https://lnkd.in/ehHUFtD4) #Trailblazer #GolfHistory #InclusiveFairways

Golf has long been the cliché networking social event for lawyers like me and other professionals outside of the traditional bars, lunches, and coffee. However, I have always noticed that there are several bars to entry: having sufficient skill; having sufficient time; having sufficient funds to purchase golf clubs; knowing the right people; and other more historic bars to entry that prevented everyone (and I mean everyone) from participating (which I would be remiss not to acknowledge). Lately, I have been thinking about changing the above as I progress in my own golf journey. Accordingly, like how other folks have put together social events through the Minnesota State Bar Association, I have been thinking of putting together a “shoddy golfers group” ALL lawyers and other professionals are welcome, where we play entry level courses, only play 9 holes, and everyone of all skill levels are welcome, which hopefully should address some of the above-mentioned barriers. I also have a spare set of clubs that I am happy to loan someone. Any interest? #MSBA #lawyers #minnesota #twincities #minneapolis #golf #networking
