🎓 🏫 The speed at which GenAI is being adopted among students and educators is already transforming how we think about education, especially for the youngest students. Yet previous efforts to improve the quality of education on a large scale through technology have not yielded the desired results. Will things be different with GenAI? The market is maturing very quickly for AI-powered learning platforms with novel approaches, and I believe  the rapid adoption of GenAI creates significant opportunities for startups to provide immediate and superior improvements to mainstream LLMs. Read all my thoughts in my latest blogpost. The pace of innovation and entrepreneurship is alive and well in the education sector, despite the recent pullback in investment capital and growing fiscal uncertainty in many districts. AI is clearly the driving force. The pace of innovation is impressive, especially given the circumstances. We've seen a huge wave of entrepreneurial activity for AI-based applications across a wide range of use cases in education. Huang Jensen, the now-famous CEO of Nvidia, was quoted in 2017 as saying, "Software is eating the world, but AI is going to eat software." At the time, that prediction may have seen far-fetched, but now it seems closer to reality than ever. Personally, I find it to be increasingly difficult to keep up with the pace of change in the edtech sector. There are just too many startups (and pivots, for that matter) to keep track of. Fortunately, there is a new resource from Edtech Insiders that is designed to help make sense of the chaos. Building on a map/taxonomy that Laurence Holt and Jacob Klein started, the EdTech Insiders team (Alex Sarlin + Ben Kornell) recently developed this new and improved Generative AI Map that 1) introduces a categorization schema for a variety of education use cases and 2) identifies major players within each. Recently, I made a big move from the vibrant energy of New York City to the tranquil beauty of southern Georgia. This change has been nothing short of rejuvenating, and it has given me a fresh perspective on my career and personal aspirations. I’ve embraced travel, both for work and pleasure, which has opened my eyes to new possibilities and adventures. During my career pause, I’ve been deeply contemplating the future of AI. It’s clear that while AI holds immense potential, it also poses a risk of leaving many behind—especially those who lack access or the skills to integrate these transformative tools into their professional and educational lives. This realization hit home, particularly within the education sector, where students, educators, and institutions must quickly adapt to keep pace with AI’s rapid advancements. In response, I am incredibly excited to announce the launch of AI Anvil—a blog dedicated to demystifying AI and providing practical, hands-on strategies for embedding AI into education. AI Anvil will cater to four key audiences: students, educators, educational institutions, and EdTech startups. My mission is to ensure everyone can harness the power of AI, from the classroom to the boardroom, making these cutting-edge tools accessible and beneficial to all. Alongside this passion project, I am actively seeking a new role as an IC Product Manager in the dynamic EdTech space. I’m particularly drawn to startups that are mission-driven and pioneering innovations in Data and AI. I am eager to contribute my skills to an organization that shares my vision for leveraging technology to create meaningful impact in education. Moreover, I am committed to giving back to the community by volunteering with organizations that uplift underrepresented students. I hope to empower the next generation with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed in an AI-driven world, while gaining invaluable insights that will inform my work in AI and education. Did you know that despite the initial resistance, AI adoption in education is growing? During the course of the week, MagicSchool, a Denver-based startup, has raised $15 million in a Series A round led by Bain Capital Ventures to develop generative AI tools for educational environments. Founded by Adeel Khan, MagicSchool initially focused on tools for educators but has expanded to include tools for students. The company’s products, used by over 2 million teachers and 3,000 schools, assist in lesson planning, test creation, and other educational tasks. Despite initial resistance, AI adoption in education is growing. MagicSchool aims to save educators time and help students prepare for an AI-driven future. Investors include Adobe Ventures and Common Sense Media. Challenges remain, such as ensuring AI's effectiveness and ethical use in classrooms. As the landscape of education continues to evolve with technological advancements, the integration of AI in schools presents both opportunities.
