Lovehoney wants to challenge attitudes toward sex toy advertising – one cucumber at a time 😲 I'll explain 👇 The sex toy brand has frequently had to get creative with its ad strategy due to limitations on what products it can show and when. It's no stranger to an ASA complaint or an outright ban. To get around this, Lovehoney is now using everyday items like cucumbers and toothbrushes as makeshift toys on billboards that it says are 'unbannable'. It's pretty tongue-in-cheek and attention-grabbing but there's a bigger message that the brand wants to get across: normalising the conversation around sexual wellness. Sex, fear, laughter sell...or not? ;) Everyone knows that these aspects are the main engines of a quick sale. But is it true? I saw a study that showed that among men, the formula (Sex + Brand Name) in commercials does not work! Especially if a goal of an advertising campaign is to increase brand awareness or persuade you to make a quick purchase. Insights: - yes, sex in videos is still remembered in general more - but the BRAND itself is not remembered! It turned out that the brand's memorability was higher where the videos were WITHOUT sexual overtones. Men just got distracted from the main task to buy! These days there are basically three ways kids will learn about sex: -From their parents -From their peers -From pornography Research shows that due to the relative ease with which kids can access pornography on digital devices, they are seeing it much earlier and more often than their parents know. Often it happens at school.  Or on the school bus. It even happens on school-issued devices. I wrote about teens and pornography in a three-part blog post series (https://lnkd.in/e8qaZjNg). Know what I found as I researched the topic? I found out why kids often initially look at pornography. Yes because they're curious. But also because they're looking for answers that grownups aren't giving them. Please have age-appropriate conversations with your kids about body safety. And sex.  Answer your kids' questions, and if you don't know the answers, find them. "I’m just not a political person.” "I only vote for the president.” "Why should I care about politics?” Everything is political. Your existence, the companies you buy products from, and so much more. Recently, Texas Republican lawmakers created a bill that would ban the sale of sex toys in Target, Walmart, and CVS. Keep in mind that Texas already has a a law stating that it is illegal for someone to own 6 or more sex toys. But yet Texans do NOT need a license to carry… Most adult toy stores are honestly catered to men and are not welcoming at all (from my experience). Being able to purchase adult toys in stores like Target, Walmart and CVS can eliminate some of the shame, uncomfortableness, and hesitancy that some may face. Especially, when you grow up in a culture that puts many taboos, stigmas, and shame around sexual pleasure. Pleasure is political.
