Sapere was asked to provide a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) for a proposed new medical school at Waikato University, commissioned by the Ministry of Health. This work is part of a larger effort to address the need for more general practitioners (GPs) in rural New Zealand. The analysis, prepared as part of the business case, evaluates options to expand medical training and improve healthcare access in underserved regions. The Ministry of Health's memorandum of understanding with the University of Waikato reflects the significance of this initiative, with the Coalition Agreement requiring a full CBA before further commitments are made. The report highlights the complexities of increasing rural GP coverage. While partially redacted, it’s a key step in this evolving process. This project showcases our expertise in delivering impactful economic insights for critical policy decisions. Hear more from ACT Leader David Seymour, Minister Shane Reti, and Sarah Dalton, from the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, in recent media coverage: · “We need more doctors” – Support for new Waikato medical school (RNZ, 22 Nov 2024) https://lnkd.in/g7CvMwZP · ACT Leader raises doubts about Waikato medical school (RNZ, 21 Nov 2024) https://lnkd.in/gvM-8kKm #Sapere #generalpractitioners #hospitals #NewZealand #medicalschools https://lnkd.in/gam4kmZW

🚨 Goodbye Junior Doctors, Hello Resident Doctors! 🚨 So, what does this mean? Let’s break it down: ✅ Resident Doctors are fully qualified medical professionals in training to become consultants or GPs. Many have over a decade of experience and are vital in surgeries and medical care. ❌ The term junior doctor often gave patients the wrong idea – thinking they were inexperienced or still students, which isn’t the case at all! This change is backed by the British Medical Association and the government, with a survey showing support from doctors earlier this year. The term resident doctor is already widely used in countries like the US, Australia, and Canada, making this a much-needed shift. 🌍 What do you think of this new title? GPs – UNSUCCESSFUL OR REAL DOCTORS? A study has investigated what comments medical students hear about general practitioners (GP) during their education. The study aimed to shed light on attitudes towards the GP profession and work in rural area, and gain insight into the culture within medical education. THE STUDY SHOWS THAT: 🔹 Attitudes towards the general practitioner profession are reflected in comments from teachers and clinical tutors, gathered from medical students in a survey with open-text responses. 🔹Appreciative comments included »important«, »varying«, »responsible work«, »broad skills«, and »good working hours«. 🔹Deprecatory comments included »stressful jobs«, »unstimulating routine work«, »incompetent doctors«, and »low status«. 🔹During their education, medical students hear negative comments about GPs and their field, which may influence their choice of the GP profession. The study was conducted at Umeå and Uppsala University in Sweden. 🗞 Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/di3-5Pc4 #research #ruralhealth #GP
