Taking care of ourselves at work is often pushed aside in the hustle to meet deadlines and impress our employers. But here’s a reminder: your well-being should always come first. Burnout doesn’t just affect you; it also affects your team and the quality of your work. When you’re running on empty, creativity wanes, productivity dips, and stress levels soar. It’s crucial to set boundaries and recognize that you don’t need to sacrifice your mental health for a paycheck. Taking a break, practicing mindfulness, or even just having a good old-fashioned chat with a colleague can do wonders for your mood and focus. Employers who genuinely care about their employees understand the importance of self-care and the benefits it brings to the whole team. Their understanding will go beyond lip service and will show in their actions. They will respect your time away. They will neither expect nor mandate you to answer emails or return messages when you are outside your working hours. They will not champion a “company man” mindset that requires you to place work above all else. They will value your mental health because to not do so is the clearest sign they do not value you as a person. So, next time you feel the pressure mounting, remember that it's okay to step back and recharge. Let’s champion a culture that values balance and well-being over constant grind. Together, we can create workplaces that inspire productivity without sacrificing our mental health. #Afya #SelfCare #WorkLifeBalance #MentalHealthMatters #BurnoutPrevention #HealthyWorkplace

Burn - how to spot the signs 🚸 Have you ever sat in the office and spotted a colleague or a team member experiencing a rough week and it's only Wednesday? If so, that’s your opportunity to influence how they experience the work environment. You can turn WTF (not what you think 😆) into actions that could have a real impact on how they feel: ‘W’ – reach out to them and invite them into a quiet space. Find out 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 is happening to them and measure where they are at on the wellness scale to decide your next step. ‘T’ – go outside into the fresh air 𝗧𝗢𝗚𝗘𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 to brainstorm potential work arounds that may help them out. Remember, self-care is also important, so if you are not in the right headspace to support someone, find someone who is and/or connect them with EAP. ‘F’ – provide a 𝗙𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗗𝗟𝗬 ear and be their cheerleader as they reengage and reconnect whilst making the necessary changes that will place them at the top of the wellness scale once again. Don’t ignore the signs of burnout at work. Remember to take care of those around you. #workteam #colleaguesupport #officesupport #burnout

I’m tired today. Despite my best efforts I’m really not feeling it. My little one hasn’t been sleeping, which means I haven’t been sleeping. Monday seems to have hit me like a train, face on. I’m not at my best, and it’s not for want of trying. I’ve got a few options about how I can approach the day. I can ‘dig deep’ and try and muster the energy and motivation to match my usual working performance. How many of you can relate to this? To the pressure to just push on, keep going despite what our minds or bodies might be screaming at us. The pressure to prioritise the wellbeing of the organisation at the cost of our own mental or physical health. Short term this might work out just fine, but longer term creates difficulties not only for ourselves but for the teams and organisations to which we belong. Stress, burnout, resentment, self-criticism for being unable to meet our unrelenting standards, all contributing to longer term absence and poor performance. My other option is to find the courage to be vulnerable, to communicate my struggle, be my authentic self and ask for or express what I need. The key here is psychological safeness, or to put it another way how we feel we are held in the minds of others. Do you hesitate to communicate your needs to your employer for fear that you will be judged, perceived negatively or penalised? Or do you anticipate that your needs will be validated and met with empathy so that you feel understood and supported? One of these work cultures fosters fear, the other trust. Psychological safeness is a game changer. So, as I leave to go for a walk, grab some well needed fresh air to return to work refreshed and renewed, I invite you to reflect on how psychologically safe your workplace feels. #workplacewellness #workplacewellbeing #psychologicalsafeness #psychologicalsafety #compassion #workplaceculture

Your Mental Health can catch up to you in the workplace discreetly. Life can often feel like a high-stakes movie, and for me, that reality hit hard last year. Despite my resilience, I was overworked and ended up hospitalized during Christmas—an experience that brought into sharp focus how discreetly mental health struggles can creep up on us. Mental health isn’t just a personal issue—it’s a workplace concern too. Overwork, stress, and burnout can impact not only your well-being but also your productivity and team dynamics. Recognizing and addressing these issues proactively is key to maintaining a healthy work environment. Here’s how to connect mental health with your work life, while fostering a supportive environment: 🔹 Monitor Your Workload: Pay attention to signs of overwork and stress. Ensure that your workload is manageable and that you’re not sacrificing your health for productivity. 🔹 Open Communication: Foster a culture where discussing mental health is encouraged. Transparency with your team and management can help identify and address issues before they escalate. 🔹 Encourage Breaks: Regular breaks and time off are crucial. They help prevent burnout and allow you to return to work with renewed energy and focus. 🔹 Promote Self-Care: Integrate self-care into your routine. Whether it’s setting boundaries, pursuing hobbies, or engaging in mindfulness practices, find what helps you stay balanced. 🔹 Seek Support: Surround yourself with people who genuinely support you. In line with Simon Sinek’s value of building a circle of support, having individuals who understand and care about your well-being can make a significant difference. Utilize available resources, such as counseling services or employee assistance programs, and don’t hesitate to lean on supportive colleagues. Resilience is not just about pushing through—it’s about recognizing when you need to pause, seek help, and take action to care for yourself. A healthy workforce starts with healthy individuals and a supportive environment. What strategies do you use to maintain mental health at work?
