Flexing the future… #LG Display has launched a stretchable video screen that expands from 12 to 18 inches and can bend, twist, fold, and stretch up to 50%. Funded by the South Korean government. What catches my eye is how it’s made, using a material similar to contact lenses and micro-LEDs just 40 micrometers in size. It’s lightweight and durable, able to handle over 10,000 stretches without losing shape or image quality. Plus, it can stick to surfaces, making it versatile as an electronic cover. LG imagines this tech integrated into clothing, car dashboards, and other unique designs. Imagine sitting in a car with a seamless, bendable display or wearing tech woven right into your clothes. Sounds futuristic, right? But so far, they haven’t shared when or how this will hit the market. While the flexibility is impressive, the screen’s 100ppi (pixels per inch) resolution doesn’t match the sharpness we’re used to with modern smartphone screens, which often exceed 300ppi. That could limit its use in applications where high-resolution displays are important. As I think about this tech, I wonder if it is addressing a real need or just catering to a niche market. The stretchable display, developed after five years of research, was showcased during a government-led review meeting at LG Science Park in Seoul. The prototype, a 12-inch screen that can stretch to 18 inches while maintaining its high resolution of 100 pixels per inch (ppi), is a clear demonstration of the company’s advancements in flexible screen technology. This new model significantly improves upon its predecessor, which had a stretchability limit of just 20%.
