#NewsFromOurCourse Our 3rd cohort of students had two intensive days of information, interaction and discussion during the block course at the start of our CAS ETH in Digital Clinical Trials continuing education programme and short course The Power of Study Design. We put patients and their needs first before continuing with study methods, types of studies and other important factors of study design. Judith Safford, President of RheumaCura shared her impressive journey to becoming an engaged patient and explained what Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) means. Ivo Schauwecker, Managing Director of the ETH digital Trial Innovation Platform and President of EUPATI Switzerland, introduced the topic with his personal story and emphasised the importance of empowering patients, noting that patients have different levels of expertise. Education is the key. Sandra Kohlmaier (née Dischinger), PPI Lead at DKF Basel, brought her expertise from a researcher's perspective and presented a PPI case study. She explained how patient involvement changed the study design and also addressed the challenges. Conny Berlin, Executive Director Patient Experience Data Science at Novartis, explained how patient preference studies can change perspectives and help assess the benefit-risk profile of a drug, and the process of designing such studies in an industry setting. Key learnings included: 1. A change of perspective is important. 2. Involve patients as valued stakeholders in all phases of a clinical research project. 3. Patients are experts on their disease because they live with it every day. 4. Patients and stakeholders must be empowered to participate. 5. More resources are needed for PPI studies - the more you invest, the more you gain. "The University of California Biomedical Research Acceleration, Integration & Development (UC BRAID), in collaboration with UC Health’s Center for Data-driven Insights and Innovation (CDI2), recently partnered to offer study teams the opportunity to pioneer the use of CDI2’s UC Health Data Warehouse. Now, study teams can identify and recruit patients across the UC Health system to better meet enrollment goals and enable the recruitment of more diverse study populations. This means that researchers will be able to attract participants from different geographic locations, socio-economic statuses, and racial and ethnic backgrounds from across the state, thereby facilitating research that can better serve California's diverse communities." https://lnkd.in/gT5SBZ_i

Our LEO Foundation Center’s strategic review has been approved.   Professor Martin Malmsten, Research Director and Principal Investigator of LEO Foundation Center for Cutaneous Drug Delivery (LFCCDD), says: “This favourable and constructive review reassures us that the center is doing well and has great potential for further development. As a leader, I am both pleased and very proud.”   LFCCDD https://lnkd.in/ejJjTR6y at Department of Pharmacy, University of Copenhagen was subject to a strategic review in November by an international panel of experts, resulting in a report that recently was discussed and now approved by the LEO Foundation // LEO Fondet.   👨🔬 👩🔬 The panel was: Chair Professor Calum Drummond AO from RMIT University, Professor Marjana Tomic-Canic, University of Miami, Professor Ryan Donnelly, Queen's University Belfast and Associate Professor Pankaj Karande from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. They spent two days in Copenhagen where they met the center staff, Head of Department Jukka Rantanen and LEO Foundation // LEO Fondet representatives. Thank you all for two intensive days. So, what’s the short version of the panel’s report? Check it out: 1️⃣ 👉🏼 Key strengths of LFCCDD Overall, the panel is very happy with the development of the center and notes an excellent track record regarding publications and external funding. It also highlights the cohesive center construction, exemplary leadership, good mentoring, an enabling culture, and committed staff, and that individual projects share a common tread, enabling joint themes.   2️⃣ 👉🏼 LFCCDD opportunities Furthermore, the panel notes the proximity to the large-scale facilities MAX IV Laboratory and European Spallation Source ERIC as a competitive advantage for the center. Based on these considerations, the panel sees opportunities for the center to intensity its international ambitions regarding both funding and collaborations, as well as to further develop translational activities and the position of the center within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH at the University of Copenhagen.   3️⃣ 👉🏼 Recommendations for future development of LFCCDD In addition, the panel recommends some aspects to be considered in the continued development of the center, including the teaching load of center staff, laboratory space, and strategies for future funding of the center. #pharmacy #skindiseases #skinresearch #dkforsk #kbhuni
