Today, I had the privilege of participating in the event “Creating a Mentoring Movement” organized by Bharatiya Yuva Shakti Trust (BYST) at the Madras Management Association (MMA). It was an enriching experience, joining esteemed experts from government bodies, financial institutions, and various industries to discuss the transformative role of mentoring in empowering the next generation of entrepreneurs. Sharing my journey as a CTO (Touchmark Descience Pvt Ltd) in the software industry, I reflected on the pivotal role mentorship played during my formative years. A mentor can illuminate the path forward, helping avoid costly mistakes and instilling values like resilience, financial discipline, and the power of collaboration. At Descience Open Source Club, we strive to emulate this impact by mentoring students and budding aspirants, guiding them toward meaningful innovations and entrepreneurial success. My key takeaways from the discussions today include: 1. Summary: Don't just be the person they remember, be the person they reach out to afterwards Yesterday was one of those days that made me feel warm and fuzzy; a real validation of the work we do at Shiageto Consulting. Not one, not two, but three former clients reached out for a mentoring chat about a difficult situation they were currently grappling with. One of them had become a mentee 10 years back, the second 3 years ago and the third one was a recent attendee of a training session I ran. It was such an honour that they not only enjoyed the work we did but that it inspired them to reach out afterwards, seeking mentorship and advice during tough times. At the end of every workshop, session or project I deliver, I always say: "Please stay in touch, I am always available to help or just for a catch up". 95% of clients/participants don't take up the offer, which is absolutely fine [to be honest, if they did, I would be swamped] but those that do tend to become mentees, collaborators, clients and/or friends for life. This is no insignificant decision and so I'm grateful; it really touches me to be able to impact people in a positive way. When I talk to leaders about the impact they should be striving for, this is one of the positive indicators. It's a pleasure to do what I do; this is a cherry on top.
