🌐 The Evolution of E-Commerce: Opportunities and Challenges E-commerce has transformed the global retail landscape since its emergence in the early 2000s, accounting for 13% of retail trade in goods. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this growth, with a 37% increase in 2020 compared to 2019. Amazon and Cdiscount lead the market in France, but major retail chains (Leclerc, Carrefour, FNAC-Darty) and nearly 200,000 businesses across industries also play a significant role. Global platforms like Alibaba and Wish have further expanded competition. 📦 Environmental and Social Impacts While e-commerce streamlines shopping, it raises concerns about environmental sustainability. The production stage contributes significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, but the last-mile delivery process also impacts urban air quality. Solutions such as low-carbon fleets, optimized delivery flows, and prioritizing relay point deliveries are crucial for reducing emissions. 💼 Impact on Jobs and Competition E-commerce has disrupted traditional retail and logistics sectors, impacting employment growth in retail while creating jobs in transport and logistics. However, practices like free delivery strain margins for omnichannel retailers. The rise of automation in warehouses and stores may further reshape the job market. 📊 Key Recommendations for Sustainable Growth 1️⃣ Promote Competitive Fairness: Address tax imbalances, regulate marketplace compliance, and strengthen consumer protection. 2️⃣ Integrate Logistics in Urban Planning: Optimize warehouse locations through regional planning to reduce land use and emissions. 3️⃣ Enhance Environmental Performance: Prioritize eco-friendly delivery methods, increase transparency in delivery emissions, and encourage sustainable practices. 4️⃣ Empower Local Businesses: Support digital transformation for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and foster local e-commerce tools. 5️⃣ Introduce a “Sustainable E-Commerce” Label: Highlight environmentally and socially responsible players to guide consumer choices. The path forward requires collaborative, swift action to balance innovation with sustainability and ensure the growth of a diverse and resilient commerce ecosystem. #ecommerce #ecommercebusiness #ecosystem #france #germandrop

The emergence of Temu, a global e-commerce platform known for its low prices and wide product variety, is likely to significantly impact our local brick-and-mortar stores. Impact is analyzed across several dimensions, a shift to online shopping, discount culture, ability to navigate logistical and regulatory challenges, etc. Our local stores need to take opportunities to adapt thru digital transformation, focus on providing a superior in-store experience and personalized service. They need to differentiate themselves by emphasizing locally sourced quality products, sustainability, and community engagement. To elevate their competitive advantage, they need to invest in e-commerce platforms, blending online and in store experiences to retain customers. There're already stores making strides in these areas. Maybe our policymakers need to step in and address this thru trade regulations or even tariffs. Otherwise if there are no operational adaptations traditional stores will continue to face market disruptions.

E-commerce is not just about global trends—regional dynamics deeply shape it. 🌍📦 Recent data from Eurostat reveals stark contrasts in online shopping habits across Europe and within Poland itself. While Warsaw boasts an e-commerce adoption rate exceeding 70%, regions like Podlasie still lag behind. But why? Our e-Commerce Business Unit Director, Dominik Plichta, shared his insights in an interview with Rzeczpospolita, a major Polish newspaper. 🔹 Logistics infrastructure plays a key role. Regions with a dense network of parcel lockers and pick-up points, such as Warsaw, see much higher online shopping penetration. In contrast, areas lacking last-mile infrastructure face significant barriers to adoption. 🔹 Consumer behavior is shaped by accessibility. In countries like the Netherlands, high e-commerce engagement is not just about purchasing power—it’s also about the convenience of fast, reliable deliveries. The same principle applies regionally in Poland: urban hubs with strong logistics infrastructure encourage online shopping, while rural areas with fewer delivery options remain underserved. 🔹 Investment in infrastructure is the key to unlocking growth. Dominik pointed out that expanding last-mile solutions in less-developed regions could significantly boost e-Commerce adoption, bridging the gap between urban and rural consumers. At Fulfilio, we see these patterns firsthand. Supporting fast, scalable logistics solutions is not just about meeting demand—it’s about shaping the future of e-commerce across different regions. 🚀 Read more about Dominik’s insights in Rzeczpospolita: https://lnkd.in/djxjPmya [Polish only] #Ecommerce #Logistics #LastMile #RetailTrends #BusinessGrowth #Fulfilio #ThoughtLeadership #DigitalTransformation

Some companies that facilitate transactions between businesses and/or between businesses and consumers, like Amazon, emerge as e-commerce companies without traditional retail outlets. These companies typically identify a gap in the traditional retail market that can only be filled through e-commerce solutions. Is the retail giant REWE Group building Germany’s first food-superapp? 🛒📲 Rewe has always been a pioneer in digital offers and now expands its portfolio with investments and partnerships. Last month alone, 2 deals hit the news: 1️⃣ Rewe participated in Flink's new funding round of 150$mn valued at ~900$mn (down about 70% since its peak valuation). With this cash injection, Flink plans to break even in Q2 2025, apparently having reached operational profitability in selected markets already today. Also they plan to open 30 additional warehouses. 2️⃣ Lieferando and Rewe announced a partnership, providing access to 3000 SKUs of Rewe’s assortment via Lieferando’s app, delivered by Lieferando’s courier network. “Rewe Express” promises delivery times of 45 minutes, closing the gap between Rewe’s scheduled delivery and Flink’s ultrafast delivery. With the new offers, Rewe now ticks many boxes that I expect from a food-superapp, combining all things food, and beyond: ✅ Brick and mortar stores ✅ Click and collect ✅ Scheduled delivery ✅ Quick-commerce (via Flink and Lieferando) ✅ Offer promotions in app ✅ Digital travel agency ❌ The only piece missing is food delivery. Did you know that the Russian chains X5 and Magnit are also at the frontier of supermarket tech? ➡️ Magnit has integrated AI to monitor inventory at shelf level, ensuring products (including 5000 pharmacy SKUs) are always available for their 30 minute delivery & click and collect. ➡️ Meanwhile, X5 Group deploys smart shopping carts, automatically scanning products for a frictionless checkout. I’ve just talked about why the concept of the food-superapp is so appealing at a conference and will share the takeaways here, soon.
