The school year is coming to an end, and this means that many students are headed out into the business world for their first internships or summer associate roles. If this includes you, have you thought about what it takes to be a successful intern? I've been privileged to host many classes of summer legal associates and undergraduate interns, and there are some qualities that set the best apart from the rest. The best interns are naturally inquisitive. When encountering an issue of first impression, they'll do their own research before asking a question they could have answered on their own. And let's face it, when you're an intern, every issue is one of first impression. They are problem-solvers. Coming in to a company or firm with fresh eyes, they often have a perspective that helps them see problems in new ways. One summer, an intern discovered the very simple answer to a question that 2 years of employee research and $50K in consultants had been unable to find. We'd all been over-complicating it. They are quick thinkers. I tasked a summer associate with researching a topic that would have taken outside counsel days to ponder, research, and come back with a long memo. An executive needed the answer that day. In 15 minutes, the associate had a 90%-confidence answer that was absolutely good enough to satisfy the executive and was later confirmed by more detailed research.
