Modhaus is a rare example of a blockchain use case that works at scale. K-pop fans who own membership tokens (NFTs) take an active role in their artist's career, voting for everything from member line-ups to song line-ups and tour schedules - decisions normally taken by a corporation. The decentralized music industry has been a target of web3 founders for some years. Making it work has been tough, so why does it work in K-pop? 1: Blockchain is being used to facilitate an *existing* passion that is group-centric rather than individual-centric. This means there is less need to motivate participation through speculation (which attracts Ponzi artists and Ponzi victims). 2: This pre-existing, group-oriented passion means that the challenging aspects of web3 - unapproachability and unreliability - become less so. Although the program was not explicitly marketed as 'on-chain', non-Web3-native users clawed their own way to Polyscan and educated themselves (and others) on the mechanics and terminology. This underlines a message that we all know by now: code is nothing without culture. Examples are using NFT technology to produce limited edition digital goods, or monetizing artist IP by issuing NFTs. These models exploded with the popularity of the NFT market, but since the NFT market downturn, most of them have either disappeared or suffered a steady decline in price.   Second, we see models that actively utilize Web3 technologies, such as engaging fans through a token-based governance structure. This is a structure that allows fans to directly vote on decisions related to artist operations, and operates similarly to a DAO. For example, at Modhouse, which manages the idol group Triple S, fans purchase NFT photo cards that give them corresponding voting rights. Through this, fans can participate in decisions related to the group's operations, such as the name of the fandom and deciding which songs will be listed on an album. Recently, projects that utilize token-based governance to participate in the idol selection process have also emerged in Japan. Similar models are expected to appear more frequently in the future.
