When it comes to driverless debate, California is likely the most polarized on this issue. But the DMV there has proposed plans that could give the green light to driverless trucks, a boon to proponents of this technology. It has outlined a set of rules and regulations to allow driverless trucks weighing more than 10,000 pounds on the roads, which had been banned up until this point. Here are a few rules that stand out to me: 🚛 Companies have to conduct testing with human safety drivers 🚛 The vehicles will able to drive routes for long-hail deliveries 🚛 They’ll be permitted in less complex operational areas 🚛 The vehicles will be excluded from transporting passengers, oversize loads and hazardous materials As we’ve long known, the biggest obstacle to scaling autonomous vehicles is the understandable wariness from the general public, not the technology itself. Getting the public on board is possible, but will require a measured and judicious transition. This proposed set of rules has struck the right balance — they’re progressive enough to enable meaningful testing, while also still putting some reasonable limits that will likely ease concerns of everyday drivers and passengers on the roads. FMCSA to gauge value of truck roadside warning devices WASHINGTON — After declining to let autonomous trucking companies substitute cab-mounted warning beacons for ground-based devices to alert passing motorists of a disabled truck, federal regulators plan a deeper dive into how much crash protection traditional devices actually provide. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is looking for 256 drivers to collect data for an experimental study, “Warning Devices for Stopped Commercial Motor Vehicles.” FMCSA will use the data to evaluate “whether warning devices meaningfully influence crash-relevant aspects of human performance in the presence of a parked or disabled commercial motor vehicle (PDCMV), and if so, how and to what extent,” according to a notice published Tuesday. “Given the increasing focus on ADS (automated driving systems), questions surrounding the safety of CMV drivers when deploying warning devices, and the availability of new technology and alternative devices since these questions were last explored in the 1980s, there is a need to thoroughly evaluate the effectiveness of warning devices under current regulations,” FMCSA stated in the notice. https://lnkd.in/eaF4qe36

Autonomous Trucking is Closer Than You Think, With Favorable Regulations Already in Place In 2019, The U.S. Department of Transportation issued guidance through their AV 3.0 framework that specifically stated that going forward, federal trucking regulations from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will no longer assume that a commercial vehicle driver must be a human present in the vehicle. This cleared the way for self-driving trucks to operate legally, as long as they comply with existing trucking regulations. Autonomous big-rig trucks are about to start long-haul operations as Aurora Innovations says it's still on schedule to complete its safety case by the end of the year. Aurora then plans to take the safety driver out of the cab for the freight it's hauling now between Dallas and Houston. Even if Aurora's driverless Class 8 trucks operate flawlessly, there is a risk lurking out there, and it's visible on billboards that pepper the highways. If the Aurora truck is involved in an accident -- even if Aurora is following all the rules and operating properly -- there can be legal consequences.
