We've kind of stumbled into the broad business model for the Internet, with many critical decisions made by default rather than debate. One question that arises is whether the neutrality rules put into place to promote innovation have created a crippling problem for the telcos and cable MSOs that provide the underlying transport and access resources. What's happening here? https://lnkd.in/eRf3ives

On May 7, the FCC issued a Declaratory Ruling that reclassifies “broadband Internet access service” (BIAS) as a “telecommunications service.” While mainstream media has largely focused on the net neutrality aspects of the Order, this post by Keller and Heckman LLP's Beyond Telecom blog explores other significant implications of this latest reclassification... #techREG #technology #broadband #isp #openinternet #netneutrality #internet

The recent court ruling blocking the FCC's reinstatement of net neutrality rules has significant implications for the telecom industry. The key impacts are: Uncertainty and Investment: Without clear net neutrality rules, telecom companies may face increased uncertainty, potentially impacting investment in research and development of new technologies. IP Valuation: The value of IP assets, such as patents and copyrights, could fluctuate based on how internet service providers (ISPs) prioritize traffic. Competitive Landscape: ISPs with preferential treatment could gain a competitive advantage, potentially impacting the market for innovative products and services. Data Privacy Concerns: The absence of strong net neutrality rules could lead to increased data collection and potential privacy risks, impacting IP related to user data and analytics. In conclusion, while the full impact of this ruling is yet to be determined, this evolving landscape warrants a closer examination of its implications. An investigation by The Markup found that AT&T, Verizon, EarthLink, and CenturyLink disproportionately offered slow internet service to lower-income neighborhoods of color for the same price as speedy connections they offered in other parts of town. This story isn’t new. 🤬 Consumers need accountability from the Federal Communications Commission to ensure that what we pay for the internet doesn’t dictate our access to certain sites and speeds. NTEN joined over 100 organizations in calling on the FCC to restore Net Neutrality now. Access to affordable, reliable, high-speed internet is a must-have for modern digital life and participation in the global economy. Most small ISPs see Net Neutrality as a cover for the FCC wanting control of the Internet and Broadband. Nothing positive will come of this move by the FCC, especially for small ISPs, as it will simply layer on more Federal bureaucracy. In fact, it could ultimately lead to higher costs for consumers as these companies seek other means to cover yet another unfunded mandate by the FCC. https://lnkd.in/gahnanw4

KHTelecomAlert: The FCC voted to reclassify broadband service as a Title II telecommunications service under the Communications Act, opening the door to Net Neutrality policy implementation. Plus, a Petition for Rulemaking requests that the Commission open the lower 900 MHz band to mobile broadband networks and the FCC is exploring georouting rules for the 988 Crisis Lifeline. Perhaps I've been too swayed by operators who've been banging the drum against #netneutrality. They've claimed that the internet works just fine without it and that net neutrality will quash private investment in broadband. But the Federal Communications Commission's arguments today seem pretty rational to me. The FCC wants oversight of #broadband providers so it can help consumers when there are outages, and it can protect our privacy. Also, telcos (which the FCC oversees via Title II of the Communications Act) have obviously evolved into broadband providers. So these new net neutrality rules are just making it official that broadband providers are governed by the FCC. IMHO Fierce Network Fierce Telecom Fierce Wireless https://lnkd.in/g_iQp6KF
