😮 Shocking Fact at University Open Days In the last few weeks, I have been accompanying my daughter to visit different universities in London. We attended some lectures on Modern Languages and other courses. I was surprised to hear that at certain leading UK institutions, students who take Modern Languages as an undergraduate degree are not trained to use CAT (Computer-Assisted translation) Tools, which are only taught at postgraduate level. Really? This is July 2024! What are your thoughts on this? Shouldn't CAT training be included in undergraduate programs? Possibly a completely new curriculum should be developed to prepare language professionals to work alongside the robots (AI). #MFL #UKuniversities #studylanguages #CATtools #universitytraining

New Cambridge Element free to download until June 19th. "Input". From the website: "This Element offers an overview of the key concepts related to input and the major lines of research exploring its nature and its role in second language learning. It then puts things together into a coherent, if controversial, picture of input and its role in development, emphasizing the place of consciousness. In this and most other current perspectives, implicit (unconscious) input-based learning is the heart of second language acquisition. This suggests two general options for teaching: (a) trust the natural implicit processes, trying to create optimal conditions for them; (b) direct those processes to selected features of the input, probably using explicit instruction. The conclusion is that (a) appears preferable." https://lnkd.in/dn29Znf2

Kind reminder for our next AEA Europe Inclusive Assessment SIG webinar on Tuesday 14th of May 2024. Our speaker is Dr Letizia Cinganotto, former Senior Researcher at INDIRE. Letizia is a Lecturer at the Università per Stranieri di Perugia, Italy, where she is also Rectoral Delegate for International Relations and a member of the Board of Directors of the Centre for Language Evaluation and Certification (CVCL). She holds a PhD in synchronic, diachronic, and applied linguistics and the National Scientific Qualification as an Associate Professor. She is a member of different working groups and scientific committees both nationally and internationally. She has published a large number of articles and five volumes. The title of her presentation is: "Using #CLIL and #learning #technologies with a focus on #AI to promote #inclusive #assessment". Starting from the main pillars of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), the presentation will highlight the potential of technologies in a CLIL learning environment in terms of students' #participation, #engagement, and #learning #outcomes. Particular attention will be devoted to Artificial Intelligence for the development and #enhancement of the four modes of #communication described in the #Common #European #Framework of #Reference for #Languages, Companion Volume, interconnecting and integrating #language #competence and #subject #content from a CLIL perspective, with particular focus on #inclusive #assessment. Examples of #AI-#powered #tools to be experimented in a CLIL class, especially for inclusive assessment will be mentioned and explored through a "hands-on" #approach. As the #Chair of AEA-Europe's Inclusive Assessment SIG, I look forward to this insightful presentation and to fruitful conversations about how we can integrate #CLIL with #AI #learning #technologies to promote #inclusive #assessment in #Higher #Education. #CLIL #inclusive #assessment #CPD #professional #bodies #networking #Higher #Education #teaching #learning #assessment #multilingualism #AI #digital #literacy #EDI

Call for Chapter Proposals: From the start, educational technology is concerned with the ways for transforming language teaching and learning in the realm of the learners’ individual needs and preferences through self-led or personalized learning experiences. However, these experiences do vary, and thus, urge language teachers to analyse learners’ strengths and weaknesses to tailor the content and the level of difficulty in order to suit the learners’ needs. Therefore, this edited book, "Reimagining Intelligent Computer-Assisted Language Education", proposes to compile conceptual, empirical, and theoretical research that contributes to the understanding of utilizing intelligent computer assistive educational technologies to make more informed choices for learner success. Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before March 10, 2024, a chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed chapter. Please visit https://lnkd.in/d7wh5XGE for more details regarding this publication and to submit your work. You can also find detailed manuscript formatting and submission guidelines at https://lnkd.in/dCwAMmjy prior to submission. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
