When I do workshops on both/and-ing and ask people to identify their tensions, the #1 tension that arises is work/life balance. Today, on mother's day, Verena Hefti offers a provocative call to organizations to create more favorable work conditions for working parents to better address this tension. This piece is worth a read for any organizational leaders out there. Creating better conditions for working parents is not just better for moms and dads in your organizations, its better for the organization as a whole. #workingparents; #mothersday; #embracingdiversity
Executive Director at Harvard Business School | Human Sustainability | Case Studies | Franco-German born in Mexico, raised in Africa, Europe & the US
Today is Mother’s Day in the US and many other countries. Tomorrow, many of these mothers and those who fulfill motherly roles will be back at work, and most of them will be doing the work of parents, too. Many feel the tension of being a successful professional who is a mother versus a mother who is a successful professional — and the rising expectations society seems to place on both roles as we live our lives and compete for accolades in the social media aquarium. Let it not be business as usual. In this piece, we share research and reflection on how to help society, employers, managers, and all of us think about what shapes our expectations along the care(er) continuum and how this impacts our personal and professional lives, as well as physical and mental health. Verena Hefti MBE FRSA and her Leaders Plus team and community argue that as societal expectations evolve, it's crucial to advocate for support structures that empower rather than constrain. Beyond the cards, flowers, and wishes, consider: - How do your societal and increasingly social media-driven expectations influence your perception of motherhood and career? What is the impact? - How can individuals and organizations contribute to creating a more supportive and equitable environment for all parents in the workforce? and - What can you personally do to promote support for working mothers in your community or workplace, and how often do you ask directly? -- with Sylvie M Maury Ph.D, ACC and Matthew Vernon Hanson #MothersDay #Parenting #CareerSupport

We’ve been asking people who draw on care and support what values they expect from the social care workforce. They shared their thoughts and together we co-produced 7 value statements, like the one below! Do you work in a care and support organisation? Why not take a moment to reflect on these value statements and see how they match up with your own? Are there areas where your values could be more closely aligned? Remember, it’s vital to involve people with lived experience and unpaid carers in this review process. Explore all 7 value statements here https://bit.ly/4djHPit

An independent social worker's short take on #TestamentaryCapacity 📜 as we approach half way of #RememberACharityWeek and get ready for the final 2024 #FreeWillsMonth in October 2024. I see testamentary capacity as the profound affirmation of an individual's autonomy, reflecting both strength and clarity of mind. It’s not just the legal ability to draft and execute our will or codicil 👨⚖️ 👩⚖️ (acknowledging that is the legal test), but a testament to the resilience of our conscious mind and wishes in planning for the future in the face of life’s inevitable uncertainties. To possess testamentary capacity means to consciously and clearly acknowledge the people we love, the causes we cherish, and the legacy we wish to leave behind. Whilst also considering those we ought to give consideration of, but for reasons of clarity of mind, choose not to benefit, or to benefit differently. It is a true act of the final empowerment a person can be supported with, allowing us to take control of our life narrative, ensuring our wishes endure after we leave this place 🌎 May we all recognise the gift of our clear minds and hearts, using them wisely to shape the future for those we leave behind, with grace, dignity and respect 🙏
