January can be a challenging month for mental health for a number of reasons, including the post-holiday come-down, the return to work or school, and the cold and gloomy weather. It is important that you take care of your mental health and wellbeing and use January as an opportunity to get into new health and mental wellbeing habits. https://lnkd.in/epSkpWUP

💚💚💚 YOU MATTER 💚💚💚 Let's recognize World Mental Health Day. In the past 5-10 years, I've spent a lot of time talking about mental health and working to create spaces where others felt safe talking about it, too. As someone who has been living with depression most of my life, I appreciate the things listed in the graphic below. They help a lot on the day-to-day. I also want to be clear on some important things that aren't listed here that also support mental health: - Therapy - Media breaks (social media and other news media) - Medication (as appropriate, no shame) - Psychological safety in the workplace - Distancing yourself from toxic relationships (this one's hard, I know) - Living your values - Pets ("puppy therapy" is my favorite) - Setting boundaries - Abstaining from alcohol/drugs - Meditation - Volunteering - Meaningful connections with people - Taking time for yourself There are many other things I could list here, but ultimately my point is that you have more control over caring for your mental health than you may realize. It's true that there are a lot of external factors that impact our mental health that we have little or no control over. But something I've always tried to encourage people to do is to leverage the control they have, because every little bit helps. And today is a great day to think about what this looks like for you and make small tweaks (or big changes, you do you) to support your mental health. While you're at it, take a moment to check on the people around you. Caring for your mental health is important, and... small gestures to look out for others go a really long way. Ask someone how they're doing, and listen. Show genuine appreciation for someone's efforts. Lend a helping hand where you can, as your mental and emotional capacity allows. And if you have the capacity, please explore how you might be able to help those impacted by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton. The loss and devastation is still unfolding. Depending on what's happening in your life, thinking about this might be too much for you right now, and that's ok. There will be ongoing opportunity to show support as people in these areas are facing a long and slow recovery and in a lot of instances dealing with losses that can't be recovered. Search and rescue and other support teams could likely also use extra love and grace because what they're doing is physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding. To all of you showing up in this way, THANK YOU! 💜 And if you're not being impacted by the hurricanes, know that your experiences, situations, hardships, and feelings are all still valid. Always. If you're experiencing a mental health crisis or emergency, call 9-8-8. Help is available. Please take care of yourself and your mental health, today and every day. You matter. 💚💚💚

As it’s Mental Health Awareness Month, it's essential to remember that mental wellbeing isn't just a topic for May – it's a priority every single day. As a professional in the mental wellbeing field, and as someone who has struggled, i know all too well how it affects families and generations. I stand with you in recognising the importance of a culture of support, understanding, and care for mental health all year-round. Let's break the stigma, promote self-care, and encourage open conversations about mental health every day. Together, we can create a world where mental wellbeing is valued, prioritised, and accessible to all. 💚 #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #EndTheStigma #EveryDayIsMentalHealthDay
