Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s Post

Bitapaka War Cemetery, located near Rabaul on the island of New Britain, Papua New Guinea, is the final resting place of 1,056 Commonwealth soldiers, primarily Australians, who died during the Pacific campaigns of #WWII. The majority of those buried here lost their lives in the Battle of Rabaul and subsequent fighting, marked by intense Japanese resistance. While we oversee the cemetery, it is maintained onour behalf by the Office of Australian War Graves (OAWG). 📷 Rowan Foster – Office of Australian War graves

Went there in 1972 onboard HMS Hydra, an oceanographic survey vessel. Wasn’t aware of the cemetery at the time but there was a Japanese fighter plane recovered from the water. I think it was destined for a museum in Canberra? ⚓️
