How far have you come? Few years back, I was interviewing candidates for a role in my team. After meeting several candidates, I shortlisted two. 🔵 Person A, let’s call her Jenny, was from Mumbai. Her parents were both highly placed in government. She lived in Malabar Hills and went to one of the best schools in town. While doing her MBA, she spent 6 months in Paris as part of exchange program. She was bright, had good thinking and design skills (critical for the role) and was outgoing. 🔴 Person B, let’s call her Anita, was from a village 100 kms away from Patna. She did very well in her village school. On recommendation of the school principal, Anita’s parents moved her to a school in Patna in class IX. She was studying in English for the first time. Her grades suffered temporary. However, she completed schooling with flying colors. While her friends at village were getting married, she moved to Mumbai to complete post-graduation in social sciences. She picked a job in MNC and was good at her work. She was shy and when she spoke, her accent was laced with heartland Hindi. I went to my manager for guidance - who should I hire? His response was unambiguous – “Offer the role to Anita, look at the distance she has travelled.” As I read Hidden Potential by Adam Grant last week, I recalled this example. Many a times, we tend to assess a person based on his or her current position, oblivious to how far they have travelled. However, it’s critical to check the distance covered by the person. It’s an indication of their discipline, grit, adaptability and learning agility – the MUST HAVE for success in any role. Have you seen people traverse great distance? How do they stand apart? #learning #success #LIPostingChallengeIndia

Wonderful example and this is so important. The only thing I would add is that we should assess both performance (or contribution) and potential (or growth potential). These characteristics are clearly demarcating potential but performance may still need to be assessed based on the results achieved. In the end, moving people forward and upward in the team/leadership ladder should only be done if both aspects are done well.

I find this one as one of the most useful and and relevant metrics to assess while you judge the person / performance for middle senior positions. It does not matter much, where one is in his/her professional career & what position he/she is holding but what really talks about his/her grit, agility and determination is the ‘distance’ that he/she has covered. It talks of one’s potential and ability to deal with most challenging situations. We should make this a part of our comparative evaluation process for the candidates. Also, always look for one or two spikes in the person you are interacting with.

AMITAVA BAKSHI Da Milano Italia It is truly shameful that companies nowadays often hire candidates based on superficial qualities like voice tone or appearance. Today, I was called for an interview at the Da Milano store in South City Mall, Kolkata, and I felt that they called me just to insult me, nothing else. As a decent person, I expected the same level of respect from Mr. Amitava Bakshi, but unfortunately, I did not receive any. Instead, I was insulted and demotivated. If you can't respect someone, you certainly have no right to insult or demotivate them. Education defines a person's character and background, so how could anyone judge me based on my gender? What did you mean by saying, 'We want a boy'? Did I appear like a girl, or was there something else, Mr. Amitava Bakshi? Try to show respect to others if you expect the same in return, and behave like a decent person. I was highly motivated and excited about this job, but now I must say that I no longer want to work at a place where the people and their mentality are so cheap.

One of our first subscribers, Rishu, visited our Kanpur center on 18th June. He sat down with our Career Advisors to discuss his career goals and the challenges he was facing in finding a job. Rishu is pursuing a part-time graduation in commerce, has basic computer skills, and is eager to learn advanced courses like Excel and more. He had applied for countless jobs through apps and websites but, as expected, never got a relevant interview call. To make things worse, a few employers even tried to scam him with registration fees, and unfortunately, he fell for a few. After evaluating his profile and aligning his expectations regarding salary and working hours, we found that he had pretty good communication skills. So, we suggested he consider BPO/Customer Support roles, and he agreed. He picked one of our subscription plans, and to his surprise, he got an interview call the very next day (19th June). Rishu attended two rounds of interviews the same day and, by evening, he had a job offer to join the organization starting 20th June! 🎉 It’s been almost 3 months now, and Rishu is still enjoying his job 😊. He’s also planning to enroll in an advanced computer course soon. 💻 We are unfolding many such realities & insights ground and at #Jobsgaar, we believe that In tier 2 and beyond, aligning career goals and expectations is crucial, along with integrating technology.
