"Community on Wheels, at the beginning has been a group that has primarily been community-led and community-funded, to bring community resources to the large demographic of vulnerable individuals who are experiencing houselessness in Tucson, largely due to systemic barriers in housing and supportive services in the region. And, while our work involved providing essential items and resources, we also understand that these efforts aren't enough to directly address the issues we continue to witness in our community. In effect, the grant will afford us more opportunities to do more advocacy work, alongside our outreach, to speak with housed neighbors, activists, organizations that share similar values, and more to find long-term solutions to homelessness." -Xavier Martinez, Community On Wheels

NONPROFIT SPOTLIGHT - MOBILE LOAVES AND FISHES Mobile Loaves and Fishes' Community First! Village's core belief is that the single largest cause of homelessness is a profound catastrophic loss of family. In their master planned community, every aspect is designed around community and family. Community First! Village provides affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community for men and women coming out of homelessness. "Housing will never solve homelessness, but community will." This statement was made by Alan Graham, the Founder of Mobile Loaves and Fishes and the lead visionary behind its Community First! Village. Housing First and the concept of Tiny Homes for the homeless have been the leading topics of conversation on how to provide stable housing to address homelessness. Simply providing housing is not sufficient on its own to address the complex issues faced by homeless individuals and families. Both initiatives require additional support services that often may not be enough. But Community First! Village takes it one step further with its Community First housing approach. Although they offer support services that address underlying issues such as mental health challenges, substance abuse, unemployment and loss of family, they also support positive tangible social interactions to foster a sense of community and belonging. This can truly help individuals rebuild their lives successfully and facilitate the transition from street to home. Some highlights from NAEH’s State of Homelessness 2024 Report 🚨 In just one year, between 2022 and 2023, the number of people staying in shelters during the Point-in-Time Count increased by 14%. That’s 70,642 more people without a home. While 30,925 temporary shelter beds were added, it’s still not enough to meet the growing need caused by the affordable housing crisis, leaving far too many forced to sleep outside. The National Alliance to End Homelessness has released this critical report, and we at A Way Home America stand in solidarity with their mission. Our work focuses on transforming systems through public policy to prevent and end homelessness for Black, Indigenous, youth of color, and LGBTQIA+ youth. Together, we can build a path to housing justice for all. 🔗 Learn more: endhomelessness.org | AWayHomeAmerica.org #EndHomelessness #endyouthhomelessness #homeless #homelessyouth #housingisahumanright

According to recent estimates, the number of homeless people in Houston was approximately 3,300 in 2023, with a significant percentage from the Black community. Despite this figure seeming small, it becomes alarming when considering the number of people accessing homeless services in 2021, which exceeded 21,000 in Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery counties. Notably, the rates of first-time homelessness are increasing, reflecting a profound socio-economic issue. Organizations such as Bread of Life, Inc., Coalition for the Homeless, A Caring Safe Place, and Hearts of Rescue, are making significant strides in addressing homelessness, providing assistance, and creating opportunities. The initiatives range from serving meals, aiding in healthcare access, providing housing, and running a transitional living facility, among other services. Yet, the gravity of this issue begs the question - are we doing enough to prevent homelessness? At TheCaseMade, we are big on practicing what we preach. This week, it's Dr. Tiffany Manuel's turn, in this great op-ed in her local paper. Between homelessness prevention to affordable Housing, there are a range of actions and services that take place everyday in our region to try and break the cycle of homelessness and suffering. HomeAid San Diego along with 18 other affiliates around the country, work to provide housing, education, employment and essential care products to over 22,000 people, in 2023, across the U.S. at-risk of or experiencing homelessness. This Continuum of Care graphic provides a nice visual of how we need to come together, across sectors, to assess each of these pillars and determine where more or less resources should be directed. Where does your business, nonprofit, academic institution or community group support breaking the cycle of homelessness? #sandiego #homelessnessprevention #breakthecycle #continuumofcare
