Honoring a Legacy: Phil Herr, a Pioneer in Community Planning Today, we remember and honor Phillip B. Herr, a remarkable individual whose contributions to community planning and historic preservation have left an indelible mark. Phil was more than a mentor and colleague; he was a visionary who believed in the power of citizen-driven planning to create sustainable, vibrant communities. From his insightful “Herrisms” to his unwavering commitment to preserving cherished places, Phil’s work inspired countless professionals, including myself. Whether through his books, like The Art of Swamp Yankee Planning, or his engaging workshops at Harvard and MIT, Phil embodied the belief that effective planning is as much about art and connection as it is about science. In our latest blog post, we pay tribute to Phil’s legacy and explore the ten timeless "Herrisms" that continue to guide our work at the Community Matters Institute. These principles, rooted in collaboration, creativity, and inclusion, remain as relevant today as ever. As we reflect on Phil’s contributions, we’d love to hear from you: 💬 What principles guide your work in community planning or preservation? Let’s continue the conversation and carry forward the legacy of those who have paved the way. 👉 Read the full tribute and discover Phil Herr’s enduring wisdom: https://lnkd.in/gfzEmMgw #CommunityPlanning #HistoricPreservation #Leadership #Inspiration

"Only by making ourselves, our practices, and our institutions love in this particular way can we remake and redesign unjust systems. Doing so requires that we choose love over convenience, power, or the status quo, over comfort, contentment, rules, and social acceptance. To choose love means we must go against our dominant professional training when it reproduces the oppressive systems we operate under today by prioritizing personal and institutional survival, power, and profit over the flourishing of all people. It means we stop causing harm and acknowledge and repair it when we do. Leaders across all sectors must ask themselves: Are we acting in line with our calling to serve all people, especially those who face the burden of structural oppression? Are we doing our generational work to be the next founders of this nation? What risks have we not yet taken to be part of its transformation, and to uplift all people?" #equityactionde #vitalconditions #netde Healthy Communities Delaware

Church leadership differs from the corporate world. Staff are typically vastly underpaid. And volunteers are, well, volunteering. Both staff and volunteers are motivated by their faith and purpose, not just a paycheck. This adds layers of complexity to #accountability: 1. Volunteers aren’t employees. They give their time freely, so how do you hold them to high standards without alienating them? 3. Staff are often friends. You’ve likely built strong relationships with your team, and calling someone out can feel like jeopardizing that connection. 3. The church culture values grace. Many leaders fear that accountability might be seen as harsh or unloving. These realities make it tempting to sidestep tough conversations or lower expectations. But avoiding accountability doesn’t honor your team, your calling, or your church's mission.

🌟 Embracing Positive Leadership for a Brighter Future 🌟 In a world craving fresh perspectives and enthusiastic dedication, I believe it's time for a new generation of leadership to step forward. With a passion for positivity and a readiness to tackle challenges head-on, my mayoral campaign is built on these principals. Campaigning isn't just about vying for a seat—it's a beautiful, labor-intensive journey filled with highs and lows, enriching experiences, and opportunities for growth. I approach this endeavor with an intellectual curiosity to learn, coupled with the humility to acknowledge that no one has all the answers. However, I am determined to equip myself with the knowledge needed to serve our community effectively. My vision for leadership is rooted in positivity and inclusivity. I am committed to keeping my campaign focused on what I plan to achieve, rather than criticizing others. It's imperative that we set an example for our children and community by demonstrating unwavering enthusiasm and support for our city. My children deserve to see that true leadership is about empowering others and creating a thriving environment for all. Bringing others alongside you is what it’s all about. As a mayor, I see myself as the cheerleader for our community, building strong relationships and partnerships that will foster a bright future filled with endless opportunities. Together, let's embrace positivity, drive, and a shared commitment to building a stronger, more vibrant community. Join me in this journey towards a brighter future for the city of Lone Tree! Vote Marissa for Mayor May 7 by 7 PM! #PositiveLeadership #CommunityBuilding #BrighterFuture
