In the world of post-harvest loss/waste reduction, innovation is key! I am thrilled to announce the release of our co-edited book of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the #United #Nations, in collaboration with esteemed colleagues from #FAO in Rome. The book is titled "Post-harvest Management: Bridging Gaps and Embracing Innovations". This book represents a significant milestone in our efforts to reduce post-harvest losses, a critical challenge in achieving food security. By addressing the gaps in post-harvest interventions and promoting innovative solutions, we aim to empower stakeholders, from #farmers to #policymakers, with the knowledge and tools necessary to minimize losses and enhance #food value chains. Innovation plays an important role in this endeavour, offering new technologies and practices that significantly improve post-harvest processes. By integrating these advancements, we can substantially reduce losses, enhance the quality of produce, and support sustainable #agricultural practices. 30 May is the International Day of the Potato!🥔 Did you know that potatoes are considered a staple food for more than 2/3rds of the world’s population? Did you know that the potato, as we now know it, originated in the Andes Mountains in Peru, arrived in Europe in the late 16th century, and has since been cultivated in just about every country in the world? And did you also know that the global hub of potato breeding is in the Netherlands? Specifically, it’s here in Flevoland, where companies from around the world develop and breed seed potatoes to be delivered and cultivated in more than 100 countries all over Earth. As a result of the unique soil composition in the Flevoland polders, our region has grown to be a center of food and agricultural innovation and production known around the world. This position is supported by dozens of companies, from innovative start-ups to large-scale multinationals, by numerous universities of applied sciences, field labs from Wageningen University & Research, and any number of cluster organizations. Today, we celebrate the role of the not so humble potato in helping address global challenges such as hunger, climate, and even the empowerment of small farmers around the world. And we are proud of the role Flevoland plays in this globally important food chain. #WorldPotatoDay #30May #Potato #Flevoland #Proud #InvestInFlevoland

Pick of the Day (courtesy AgFunder) Extending the investor payback period from years to decades complicates matters significantly for venture capitalists operating vintage funds, as the absence of foreseeable returns can deter investment. Combining cultivated with plant-based ingredients might seem advantageous, yet this approach tends to consolidate consumer resistance. In my opinion, the more strategic focus would be on either endangered species, such as tuna, or addressing practices associated with animal suffering, such as the production of foie gras. #foodtech #agtech #cultivatedmeat

The Animal and Plant Health NZ (APHANZ) Conference was held yesterday in Wellington’s Te Papa Tongarewa. The Conference, ‘Pioneering Future Pathways’, was opened by the EU Ambassador, H.E. Lawrence Meredith of European Union in Aotearoa New Zealand, and followed with panellists, collaborative workshops hosted by emerging leaders and a rich line-up of speakers, including our own Lisa Rogers, Rural Leaders, CEO. Lisa was part of the afternoon Workshops (image). Workshop One was ‘Uniting Platforms for Innovation’. It unpacked the ways the Ag and Hort industries and research organisations might work together to innovate and how APHANZ might help make that happen. Workshop Two was ‘Future Leadership’. This included: Lisa Rogers, Rural Leaders’ CEO, Lisa Lunn, 2024 Kellogg Scholar, Category Manager for Crop Protection at Farmlands Co-operative Society Limited and APHANZ Emerging Leader, Hamish Marr, Nuffield Scholar, Farmer, and Special Agricultural Trade Envoy, and Darryl Stretton, 2018 Kellogg Scholar, Head of Merchandise at Farmlands, and Director of APHANZ and Agrecovery. The workshop looked at the qualities that define effective leadership, and how we identify these qualities. It asked the question, how can real-world leadership challenges and solutions provide insights into improving leadership practices? And, how do we improve connections between policymakers and farming communities and leaders to ensure that regulation is fit for purpose? An enriching day, full of high quality discussion, connection and ideas. -- APHANZ is an industry association that works with regulators and other stakeholders to reach solutions that result in healthy crops, animals and economy - while minimising risks to people and the planet. #MoreFoodandFibreCollaboration #EmergingLeaders
