To truly provide the best possible care for our patients, we must be willing to let go of outcomes and judgment—recognizing that our clients are making decisions based on factors we may never know or comprehend. Acknowledging and honoring these decisions without question or bias ensures we are caring for both sides of the pet-owner bond and fulfilling our role as caregivers: providing the kindest outcome in every situation and circumstance. Has a client ever been afraid that you'd judge them or get mad at them for making a certain decision? #vetmed #vetmedicine #vetmedlife #veterinarymedicine #mentorshipmatters #mentorship #vetstudent

Have you ever struggled to pill your cat? You're not alone! Three of our cats now need daily medication, and my husband and I have struggled to pill our cats. As a result of our struggles, I've come to realize how important it is to know how to medicate cats. For that reason, I'm grateful for a website developed by Caroline Crevier-Chabot called Cat Training and Handling, wherein she collected videos created by cat professionals. In particular, I'm watching the videos she collected on Medical Care. In the weeks ahead, I'll share links to some of those videos, and also the tips I've learned from them. What have been your experiences with pilling your cats?

When you genuinely want to give your team a pay rise but don’t know where you’re going to find the extra $$, turning them down is a horrible feeling. Turning down requests by staff for a pay rise is never easy – especially during high inflation ties like we’re in right now. Similarly, increasing fees is never easy either – especially when you’ve been trying to protect your clients from rising costs by absorbing fee increases without passing them on. On the one hand you have the worry of the possibility some clients may not be able to afford to treat their animals and on the other hand, you want to pay your team more. But HOW do you increase your fees in a way that’s a bit easier for your clients to accept? How do you make an increase more palatable? In episode 117 of Paws Claws & Wet Noses, VetStaff’s Julie South puts on her marketing hat and shares 10 different ways to help make fee increases a bit more palatable for clients. It doesn’t mean they’ll “like” a fee increase (who does, right?) but it’ll be a somewhat easier pill for them to swallow. Incorporating all ten ideas is definitely the way to go, but do what you can with what you’ve got right now. If you’d like to have a chat with Julie feel free to email her at julie@vetstaff.co.nz. Showcase your team’s professional credentials This is something we’re all passionate about at VetStaff. You NEED to start with showcasing your professional skills. It’s your team’s skills and expertise are two of the ways you can distinguish your clinic from the clinic down the road. Late yesterday, I facilitated a workshop on work-life harmony at the National Academies of Practice (NAP) Annual Forum. NAP is a national organization that champions interprofessional education, practice and research, consisting of 15 academies from athletic training to veterinary medicine. Sadly, the data is clear that common across these health professions is an epidemic related to burnout, exhaustion, and lack of work-life balance. While the problem is not trivial, the situation is not hopeless. In the workshop, we reviewed strategies to prevent burnout and to optimize work-life harmony.

CPD EVENT PREVIEW In advance of our FREE CPD EVENT on Wednesday 28th February, Dan has given us a preview of some of the learnings you could leave the event with. These stats tell us that incivility* has direct impact on teams. During the session, Dan will explore this impact further, focusing on why team behaviour matters in the veterinary context, and how it influences patient outcomes. *Incivility can be "anything ranging from rude or unsociable speech or behaviour. Importantly, it is as interpreted by the recipient."
