How We Made Noise with Make News When we set out to launch "Make News, Make Noise" Season 1 Showcase, our goal was simple: be unapologetically indie, painfully authentic, and speak directly to an audience we know—our people. The creators who aren’t afraid to fail fast, start over, and make the kind of art they *want* to make. We had to get real about our resources, so we bootstrapped this campaign video and leaned all the way into what we do best—telling honest stories with impact. It’s here that Zanah Thirus came in and gave our direction sharp focus. She dropped one line that became the seed for the entire campaign's manifesto: "Real indies deserve the big screen." That line was the game-changer. It wasn’t about trying to be more than what we are, but about leaning into our indie identity with purpose. Our strategy was never to over-promise production value we didn’t have, but to speak to the heartbeat of our community. We’re tired of the artificial, copy-paste narratives, and so is our audience. We’re speaking to the storytellers who define culture, not the ones who mimic it. Out of that came "Paper Route", our campaign manifesto led by Jordan our Creative Director (who is truly the coolest older Gen Z lol). It's a rallying cry for creators like us—hungry, creative, and driven by purpose. In every city, on every block, there’s a story waiting to be told. And we’re ready to fill the streets with stories that matter. Real indies deserve more than just the big screen—they deserve the respect of the industry. Check out the our manifesto Directed by Jordan (Smith / St. James), and blessed by Production Coordinator Andrea Tangelo, and the Queen of Niche Copy Lauren Grant, and our designer Ashuni Perez and follow along because this is only the beginning. Special thanks to our friends at Seed&Spark, NextFoundArtist, Kinema & The Black TV & Film Collective. Did I mention that this is 100% women-led? Welp. #MakeNewsMakeNoise #IndieFilm #RealIndies #AmplifyVoices #CulturalStrategy #CommunityDriven #FilmCampaign
Paper Route is here! NYC and Los Angeles got first looks at our first micro manifesto, and now we're sharing it with you! You might get a special delivery of our first issue of Make News(Paper) on October 2nd panel called Innovative Exhibitions: Community-Driven Screenings, Pop-Ups, and Microcinema at 10:30 AM. Read our paper featuring film reflections and reviews on Season 1 of our short film lineup, written by Black and Brown film reviewers and journalists. Where should we deliver to next?

Why It Matters
Join us for two special screenings of "We Are The Warriors" at the Bates Film Festival in Lewiston and Portland this week! The documentary explores the complex dynamics surrounding the use of Indigenous mascots and a town’s struggle to reckon with their identity and past. We hope to see you there as the film explores themes of cultural identity, reconciliation, and the enduring impact of colonial legacies. After the film, Ambassador Maulian Bryant, Michael-Corey Hinton, and Joe Hall will join the film's co-directors, David Camlin and Megan Grumbling, for a panel discussion about the film and current issues Wabanaki communities face. Lewiston - Thursday, May 16 - 6:00 p.m. - Olin Arts Center Portland - Friday, May 17 - 7:00 p.m. - SPACE Gallery Reserve free tickets at: https://lnkd.in/eEGRZWCC

This #ThrowbackThursday, we step back in time to the birthplace of American film – Fort Lee, New Jersey. The iconic Barrymore Film Center honors this rich history with a 250-seat cinema, film museum, and archive. This partnership with @barrymorefilmcenter created spaces for major retrospectives, silent film events, and emerging filmmaker showcases. Today, I stood in support of Marlow Film Studios at the Strategic Sites Committee at Buckinghamshire Council, advocating for a project that holds immense promise for our youth. It was disheartening to see the older generation overlook the struggles and crises faced by young people—a demographic that is not just the future but the vibrant present of our society. As an academic in Creative Industries at Buckinghamshire New University and a Board of Trustee member of Young Creative Bucks CEP, I work closely with young individuals. Our collective anticipation for the job creation and opportunities that Marlow Film Studios could usher in was palpable. Yet, the decision by some councillors to sideline the needs of our youth, favoring short-term political maneuvers over long-term societal benefits, was a stark reminder of the challenges we face. Despite this, we must channel our disappointment into a renewed commitment to advocate for initiatives that empower our young people. The setback we’ve encountered is not the end of the road but a call to action. It underscores the importance of active civic engagement among our youth. Now, more than ever, it is crucial for young people to exercise their right to vote in the next general election. It’s time to elect councillors and a party that genuinely supports them with concrete plans, not empty promises. This journey is far from over. Let’s harness our collective voice to shape a future that reflects our values and aspirations. Together, we can turn this moment of adversity into a stepping stone for progress. The power lies in our hands, and our votes, to create the change we wish to see. This is not over—it’s just the beginning. #VoteForOurFuture #StudentsDecide #YouthVoteMatters #ShapeYourTomorrow #EveryVoteCounts #UnitedForChange
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who came to support Marlow Film Studios at the Strategic Sites Committee at Buckinghamshire Council today. Speaking after the committee meeting Robert Laycock, CEO of Marlow Film Studios, said: "Despite many members on the committee crediting the quality of the application, and acknowledging the very significant social and economic benefits it would bring to Buckinghamshire, we are disappointed the committee was not able to support this extraordinary proposal. It is one of the most significant investment opportunities in the future of Buckinghamshire and its residents, and we are now considering the next steps for the development. In addition to luminaries like James Cameron, Andy Serkis, Paul Greengrass, Richard Curtis, Jeremy Irons and a host of global figures who support us, we are most touched by the unprecedented level of local support from Buckinghamshire. Over 5,200 people wrote letters of support, and well over 100 people turned up in person to the meeting today to show councillors how much they care.”

The Oscars a retrospective study - The glitz and glamour of showbiz creates magic out of visions that are conceived through dreams, experiences, emotions, sweat and tears. The queen or crown jewel of any director's repertoire falls down to an accomplishment of an Oscar. There is immense debate as to whether the Oscars should be given this much of precedence, In my humble opinion its a NO. I think world cinema needs to be broken into categories,The English film industry , The Indian film industry ,The Chinese film industry e.t.c. it gives better clarity, I still believe Cannes,Berlin and Rome gives better indication of acting and directoral performances compared to the Oscars, where has BAFTA follows more of a similar pattern and also their are geniuses who have never won one like Hichcock and Nolan (fingers Crossed he wins tommorow) are good examples . Let's dig deep into the history of the Oscars, the Oscars are 97 years old,the idea was conceived by Louis Mayer (MGM), a small group of 36 people gathered on January 11th 1927 and kick started the Oscars and since then it has become the darling of all award ceremonies. Membership is generally invitees only. The Oscars continue to remain the dream of many artists, it will continue to be the film industry's crown that is worn in all its glory . 💫

This time of year, the question is always, "Will you be at Cannes?" For those not going, like me, the deep pangs of FOMO are kicking in, and although we currently have no reason to attend the festival, I want to be drinking warm beer outside the Petit Majestic and donning my best dress at 8am. Instead, we are throwing it back to our previous visits and how our approach to Cannes Film Festival has changed over the years. Check out the new blog post: https://lnkd.in/eVKB-rhX
