In the Comune di Alezio, Lecce Province, Apulia Region, Italy, an adaptive reuse project has transformed a historically preserved 16th century tower. Situated among olive trees and vineyards, the former lookout tower, has been transformed into a residence. The original tower is believed to have been a religious site before it became the current tower, with a foundation dating back to the 12th century. Design studio Aires Mateus worked to preserve as much of the original structure as possible, only removing a secondary building. The materials from the outer lying building were recycled into the material used for the renovations of the existing original tower. Materials that could not be recycled, were sourced locally from quarries and integrated into the project. Due to the structures age and original construction, the property does not have air-conditioning and instead relies on the movement of air throughout the interior spaces naturally. The thick stone walls also act as an insulator for the interior spaces which helps to regulate indoor temperatures during the day. In many cases, historic structures are incredible examples of how humans adapted to the climate before mechanical heating and cooling systems were introduced. Projects like this one, show the ability for using the natural environment to regulate temperature, rather than needing to add in additional conditioning systems.
