South Dakota Industrial Hemp Association (sd-hemp.com) board members Ken Meyer of Complete Hemp Processing and Johnathan Peterson of Dakota Hemp enjoyed lecturing today on hemp law and farming at the invitation of Professor Tyler S. Moore, Associate Professor of the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law. These Ag Law students had great questions. It was fun to answer their questions and to get in their hands hemp stalks, hemp hurd, hemp fiber, hemp plastics, hemp paper, hemp clothes, hempcrete, hemp wood, hemp seeds, hemp pasta, and hemp hearts. The hemp stalk fly swatters--as always--were also a big hit. #sdhemp

Over the last couple of years, we’ve been investing in research into silage production, specifically in the UK. In the last 15 years very little on-farm research has been undertaken in this country around how grass is best ensiled and the impact this can have on milk production. This is why we partnered with University of Reading and through their work have revealed the benefits of using a crop- and condition-specific inoculant during silage making. We found that grass silage treated with Magniva Platinum Grass Dry benefitted from a reduction in dry matter losses, resulting in a 29% increase of feedable dry matter which translated into a 1.5kg/day increase in dry matter intake. Results showed cow performance was bolstered with an increase of 1.9kg/day in fat-corrected milk yields recorded. THE COLOR PURPLE Ever wonder if that pretty color might be costing you a ton of money? This article looks at the color purple to find out what causes it and whether you should be trying to make it happen, or avoiding it at all cost. To understand why purple might not be as good as it looks, we have to first ask what the color is, and what causes it to show up in the first place. Every grower knows you can create purple buds by lowering the temperature and on the surface this sounds like a simple enough way to create some wildly colorful buds that might even fetch a slightly higher price, but is this actually a good thing to do to your crop? To answer this question, the first thing you have to understand is that cold temperatures create a type of stress that makes the little green chloroplasts that perform photosynthesis, temporarily unable to function - then the next day when that malfunctioning chloroplast is exposed to the normal 2000 or more PPFD experienced on a mid summer day, or even the far lower levels encountered in a commercial grow room, severe and permanent damage can be caused to the photosynthetic machinery inside the plant. The color purple is a pigment called Anthocyanin that is produced inside plant cells that allows the plant to protect itself. This dark purple pigment absorbs light at around 530 nm in the PAR wavelengths which is.... read more: https://lnkd.in/gX5UVnsV #cannabis #cannabiscultivation #cannabisgrower #cannabisscience #cannabisbusiness #cannabiseducation

Seed Handling 101 - What is the best way to store and handle hemp seed to maintain quality and germ. ASTA’s BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOR HEMP SEED PRODUCTION lays out the following recommendations: 1. Seed Storage: If stored properly, hemp seed can maintain high viability. Proper storage slows the decline of germination rates. Seed should always be kept in breathable bags in a cool, dry, rodent-proof facility. 2. Testing: Pursuant to the Federal Seed Act, all seed sold must be tested for germination and purity, by and AOSA certified seed laboratory. A copy of the test results and sample of the seed should be maintained by the company.
