When will hemp start getting the recognition it deserves as one of the best tools we've got for sequestering carbon in agriculture? Well, it's happening, but it's going to take a little time for everyone to catch on. Firstly, our industry needs more research. The science is there, but we need further studies showing just how great hemp is at soaking up carbon and improving soil health. Then there's the policy side of things. Governments need to get on board and incentivise farmers to grow hemp for carbon credits. Let's not forget about the market. As more companies look to offset their carbon footprint, the demand for hemp-derived carbon credits will increase dramatically. Unfortunately, there is still much stigma around hemp because of its association with medicinal cannabis. We have to educate folks and show them that hemp is more than just a plant—it's a valuable commodity with game-changing attributes for the environment.
AROUND 900,000 annual carbon credits could be activated by using industrial hemp as a rotation crop in NSW and Queensland, according to an industry leader. Hempseed has been in African culture for millennia, it would be good to now re-configure their cannabis industry to also harvest outdoor open-pollinated seed for food instead of discarding it as a nuisance byproduct or as fodder. The unintended consequence of growing for seed is you get 4 times or more weight in stalks. It’s a Win-Win for hemp. (B.P.= Before Present, or number of years old.) The US imported over 72K kilos of hemp seed for consumption LAST WEEK. In the US in 2023 hemp acreage was only 28K acres. Estimated grain hemp yield is 779lbs/acre. LAST WEEK the retail ad total was up 129% from last year. Hemp is a profitable crop. NIHC advocates for domestic and international partnerships in the industrial hemp industry. With a stronger infrastructure farmers could see another revenue stream. Will we start seeing US hemp in stores this year? #JustHemp
