I realized recently that I’ve been having a dimmer switch moment. This is like a light bulb moment but just happens over a longer period 😁
In this case it was about the traditional leadership development offsite workshop.
Before moving to work with L. David Marquet on Intent-Based Leadership, I’d participated in many and had even led quite a few. It ranged from interesting, fun and different activities, through to excruciating moments of discomfort. “Peter, what would you like to say to Imelda about what she could stop, start and continue doing?”
More often than not, a few months after one of these sessions we’d find the flipcharts rolled up and discarded like an unwanted Christmas cracker.
It’s easy to be cynical about all this.
And yet, and yet… facilitated sessions and workshops remain one of the most efficient mechanisms by which to introduce ideas to teams, and have the potential to be the start of something important.
So as we roll out our new workshop package what’s the difference between now and then?
𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻: High on theory-based models
𝗡𝗼𝘄: High on real case studies and examples
𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻: Focus on thinking our way to new actions and behaviors
𝗡𝗼𝘄: Focus on acting our way to new thinking with experimentation
𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻: One Day Wonders – solve your issues in one session! (not)
𝗡𝗼𝘄: Write the introduction not the ending, recognize that change takes time and practice
𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻: Content overload – lots of ideas and concepts because we have to prove value!
𝗡𝗼𝘄: Less is more – focus on embedding a number of small changes
𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻: Tons of flipping flipcharts
𝗡𝗼𝘄: No flipcharts - only real practices to work on
Of course, every session is also a learning experience for us as facilitators as well, and so who knows what the 2034 iteration will look like, but for now, we’re ready to roll with our next generation and spread the word about the best framework for delegating and empowerment in the world.
If you’re interested in Intent-Based Leadership developed by L. David Marquet and need an easy starting place, we have something new to help.
Our new 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 package is an ideal way to understand more about the potential for working with Intent AND will give you and your leaders tools to start working with Intent straight away.
Facilitated by our Chief Executive, Peter Russian and Chuck Dunphy (former Santa Fe officer who served on the submarine with Captain Marquet), this is a highly interactive and engaging approach. It's an accessible and value adding way to generate interest and engagement amongst your leaders.
