As difficult as it is to watch, due to the lives lost, it's important that we learn. This is such a powerful video as it relates to fire spread and propagation. This is not and will not be relegated to large urban areas with high rise complexes. It's another example of what our world is experiencing where we see radiated heat, and embers travel down range from the original fire causing it to spread. In this case the fuel feeding the fire are structures, versus vegetation. Although urban here, the world has built into the wildland urban interface (WUI) where we see a collision of vegetation and structure fires that propigate eachother, driven by wind. When we watch this video closely we can see embers falling, and moving laterally left to right. This is how so many communities like Paradise, Greenville, Lahaina, Marshall, Quilpué, Limache, and Villa Alemana are lost. In this era, its never been more important for communities to be firewise. Resilience is now the name of the game. This must include using science to our benefit. There are now EPA accredited products that can be applied to lumber that will make it class A Fire resistant. There is a cost, and unfortunately #industry knows this. For those who know, there are millions of square feet of mass timber structures that have been treated using Mighty Fire Breaker, MFB-31-CITROTECH. Would that have made a difference here? I would suspect yes, however windows were open, fabric was flapping in the breeze, and as we watch, there were a lot of room and contents being burned as a result of embers and radiated heat. Treated would would not have ignited. #buildingcodes and #architecturalengineering standards need to be improved and mandated, or we will build on the cheap, and continue this vicious circle.
