I have been asked to better explain the concept of Voltage Source Converters and vsc HVDC. To do so I used a simplified HV circuit and controllers layout knowing that real applications are more complex. However, if you got this one, more complex circuits are easy. Tech Tip for the day: SEL has jumper pins on the internal boards that allow for different configurations of ports. An important part of this article is the demand on the electric grid due to significant increase in data centers and manufacturing facilities. Unfortunately, the author fails to comment on power quality and how electrical harmonics reduce grid efficiency. Data centers and general industrial facilities use VFDs to improve efficiencies, but these VFDs also put disturbances back onto the grid. ✔ The Ferranti effect, named after the Italian engineer Sebastian Ziani de Ferranti, refers to a phenomenon in electrical power transmission systems where the voltage at the receiving end of a transmission line is higher than the voltage at the sending end when the line is lightly loaded or unloaded in HV and EHV system. This effect occurs due to the reactive power consumption of the line, which causes voltage to build up along the line. When a transmission line is lightly loaded or unloaded, the reactive power component becomes significant compared to the active power component. This causes the voltage to rise at the receiving end due to the capacitive reactance of the line, leading to the Ferranti effect. ✔ The Ferranti effect can be mitigated through various means, including the use of voltage regulators, shunt reactors, and proper system design and operation. #powertransmission #transmissionline #highvoltage #electricalgrid #etap #energytransmission #smartgrid
