Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that occurs during certain seasons, usually Fall and Winter. The shorter days and less sunlight can impact melatonin levels and brain chemistry, therefore SAD can affect anyone even if you don’t typically experience depression. Light therapy for depression is by far the most common use of phototherapy lights. A significant reason people develop mood disorders such as seasonal affective disorder is low serotonin levels. Most of the 40 million cells. in our brains are impacted by serotonin, including our moods.
