Microsoft is backing the development of 10.5 gigawatts of renewable energy globally to support its AI ambitions and climate goals. In pursuit of that aim, the past decade has seen those companies hoover up renewable energy contracts with wind or solar companies. But all these projects rely on electricity grids, which are buckling under increased demand for clean energy. As digital demand rises, so does the energy consumption of data centers, which are projected to account for up to 9% of global electricity use by 2030.
