With the advances of AI capabilities, one of the worries is where the energy is going to come from to power these systems. Fortunately, Google is looking to invest $20 billion to create data centres that will be powered by on-site renewable energy. In collaboration with Intersect Power and TPG Rise Climate, this first-of-its-kind partnership will pave the way for the renewable powering of data centres around the world. The first facility will be partially ready by 2026, and fully operational by 2027. What do you think of this news? Is it hailing a new age for renewable power? #AI #RenewableEnergy #Google #Renewables

Microsoft is backing the development of 10.5 gigawatts of renewable energy globally to support its AI ambitions and climate goals. This amount is nearly half of California's 2022 solar and wind capacity and marks the most significant corporate renewable energy agreement to date. With a substantial investment, Microsoft aims to match its electricity use with carbon-free energy by 2030, addressing the energy-intensive nature of AI while reducing its carbon footprint. #ai #approachableai

Data Centers & AI Are Sucking Up Huge Amounts Of Renewable Energy As the tech giants rush to build more data centers, behind the scenes there is panic around how to power them with renewable energy. Microsoft, Meta, and Google all plan to be net zero before 2030, while logistics-heavy Amazon has targeted 2040. In pursuit of that aim, the past decade has seen those companies hoover up renewable energy contracts with wind or solar companies. But all these projects rely on electricity grids, which are buckling under increased demand for clean energy. That’s forcing the tech giants to think about their energy intensive futures and consider how they might operate their own off-grid power empires, outside the system. https://lnkd.in/gxZGEty6

As digital demand rises, so does the energy consumption of data centers, which are projected to account for up to 9% of global electricity use by 2030. While data centers are essential to modern infrastructure, renewable energy struggles to keep pace, and much of the new energy needed is still sourced from fossil fuels, further driving emissions and contributing to climate change. In our latest EP Insight, we highlight how Alphabet Inc. is publicly addressing these challenges through innovative partnerships to align future data center growth with renewable energy. While this commitment to progress is a step in the right direction, we recognize urgent action is still needed by Alphabet and across the industry. Alphabet’s efforts show that meaningful change is possible when technology and clean energy work together.
