Restorative Justice: The Buffalo’s Return on Native Nonprofit Day, May 17, 2024 For many Native American tribes, the buffalo, or bison, is a sacred animal, integral to our way of life, survival and holds spiritual significance. The near-extermination of buffalo in the 19th century was a deliberate act of oppression, aimed at dismantling Indigenous economies, cultures, and self-sufficiency. We believe the buffalo was a gift from the Great Spirit to sustain us, and its suffering paralleled our own pain and oppression. The reintroduction of buffalo represents a reclamation of heritage, sovereignty, and resilience. It signifies the restoration of a vital resource that once sustained Indigenous peoples physically, culturally, and spiritually. I had a dream where buffalo ran in herds down a street. I stood in the middle, and everyone told me to move, but the buffalo ran around me in its full power. In the midst of their strength, I saw how the Creator was utilizing the buffalo to restore unity, peace, love, and healing to my people. This act of reintroduction is a powerful symbol of justice because it acknowledges past wrongs and takes concrete steps toward healing and empowerment. It allows tribes to reconnect with their traditional practices, enhance food security, and revitalize ecosystems. The return of the buffalo is also a step towards ecological justice, recognizing the intrinsic connection between Indigenous people and our land. It supports the revival of balanced ecosystems and acknowledges the role of Indigenous knowledge and stewardship in maintaining environmental health. This effort is a testament to the resilience and strength of our Native communities in reclaiming our rights and culture. We have survived long enough to see the return of our relative, the buffalo. - LGB It’s more than a mission, it’s restorative justice. Honoring the Land and Its Peoples: A Reflection of Gratitude and Responsibility As we work to support healthier relationships through Secure Connections Retreats and Secure Connections Coaching, we are mindful of the land on which we live and operate—and the Indigenous peoples who have cared for these lands for generations. In Seattle, Washington, we acknowledge the unceded land of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the Duwamish Tribe and the Suquamish Tribe. Their stewardship of the land and waters since time immemorial deserves recognition and respect. In West Newbury, Massachusetts, we honor the Pawtucket and Pentucket peoples, part of the Algonquian-speaking Indigenous communities, whose resilience and contributions continue to shape this region’s history and legacy. This acknowledgment is a small step—a beginning—not an end. It reminds us of the privilege we hold and the historical and ongoing injustices faced by Indigenous peoples. As we reflect this Thanksgiving, we are committed to actions that support equity, justice, and inclusion. We also encourage everyone to join us in honoring the land and its peoples by contributing to initiatives like Real Rent Duwamish in Seattle or similar organizations supporting Indigenous communities. Together, we can create a kinder, more equitable world. Let’s reflect, learn, and act—not just today, but every day. #LandAcknowledgment #IndigenousPeoples #JusticeAndEquity #ThanksgivingReflection #CommunitySupport'

Tuesday #nature news 🐾 And it's more great news for our most iconic Ecosystem Engineer here in the UK... Yes the Beaver 😀 Yes the first beaver Kit born in Northumberland for 400 years 👀 🙌 To put that in perspective the last Kit was born nearly 200 years before Charles Darwin was born 😮 Just over a year ago the National Trust released four beavers into an enclosure on the Wallington Estate, near Rothbury and they have been hard at work doing what they do best. Shaping ecosystems and boosting biodiversity 🌿 They have built a number of dams, canals and burrows across the reserve and already these are slowing the flow of water and creating ponds, pools and mudbanks. The resulting wetlands have also helped to attract kingfishers, foraging Daubenton’s bats 🦇 and benefitted the declining native, white-clawed crayfish. 🦀 We continue to see the rise in species that are declining across areas where Beavers are present. Their importance should never be underestimated and their impact to the environment is critical 🌳 In May The heavily pregnant female was first spotted and footage captured shortly after showed a kit heading back to the family lodge and taking a dip. What a moment this must of been for the team 😀 Beavers are not just making a comeback...they are BACK! 😁 right where they belong 😎 Northumberland and Wallington Reserve have a new little ecosystem engineer and I am sure in know time he will become as key and effective as creating new habitats for many different species of wildlife, just like his parents 😃 https://lnkd.in/eBvNhz_H #naturenews #rewilding #conservation #ecosystems #habitats #envrionment #beavers

Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones. But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal. A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts .We are at our best when we serve others. Thursday Thought: "Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant." ~ Robert Louis Stevenson In our daily lives, it's temptingly easy to become myopically focused on immediate results. True success and fulfillment come from thinking long-term. Each small effort, every kind gesture, and every wise financial decision you make today is like planting a seed. These seeds grow into a bountiful harvest over time, impacting not just your life but the lives of those around you. Through faith and dedication, our actions can foster a thriving #community and leave a lasting legacy. Focus on planting seeds—whether it's saving a bit more, offering a helping hand, or staying disciplined in your #goals. The harvest will come, and it will be abundant. #FaithInAction #CommunityImpact #FinancialPlanning #TidepoolWealth
