🌍 BILT Expert Group session at #AfricaSkillsWeek – 🔦 Spotlight on #RPL On Thursday last week, the #BILT Expert Group took over Tent 1 at ASW! To cover the complex topic of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), we had excellent speakers and panellists. They shared insights into RPL in Kenya and Ethiopia, and its impact on the informal sector and migration pathways. 👏 Special appreciation to… Nyamai Wambua, CEO of the Kenya National Federation of Jua Kali Asspciations, for highlighting how RPL bridges the gap between informal skills and formal qualifications, fostering mobility in the labour sector. Main motivations for candidates to opt for RPL became clear: ⚙️ entry into jobs in the formal sector, ⚙️ the possibility to take part in public procurement, and ⚙️ re-entry into the formal education system. Martha wolde, Ministry of Labour and Skills, Ethiopia, for adding the role of RPL in empowering workers migrating abroad. Three key aspects for RPL: 🧱 ensuring awareness among informal workers of RPL and of their opportunities, 🧱 addressing cultural and linguistic barriers for RPL candidates in a sensitive way, 🧱 addressing employers’ perceptions of RPL candidates. Amir Radfar, #UNHCR, for addressing the distinction between migrant and refugee challenges, urging for a push to advance RPL, especially as migration to developed countries is peaking, to make sure migrants get into formal jobs, decent work. Ngigi NJUGUNA, Don Bosco Tech Africa, for shedding light on how RPL enhances employability for marginalized communities and the potential of qualification-awarding institutions, as well as for underlining that DBTA is open to engage in knowledge sharing on the topic. The BILT Expert Group leads from Africa, Europe and Asia-Pacific: Tunji Adeniran, FNIOB, mni, Matteo Sgarzi, and Eve Price for excellent moderation. 🎊And to The Audience for sharing from their contexts, in Cameroon🇨🇲, in Nigeria🇳🇬, in Libya🇱🇾, in Sierra Leone🇸🇱 …, and for asking so many good questions in English and French. 🔥 Topics covered: - integrating RPL with the National Qualification Frameworks (NQF) and domesticating high-level guidelines into local standards, - financing RPL, - counselling & guidance for RPL candidates as well as special training for RPL assessors, - RPL assessment on the job and online, - candidates’ options for additional training, - the importance of regional collaboration (e.g. Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania). ‼️The discussions reinforced the importance of RPL for developing more inclusive and flexible TVET systems and labour markets. 🌏We are ready to continue the conversation including Asia-Pacific and Europe.
