The San Diego Tourism Authority is celebrating a profitable 2024, receiving a total of 32m visitors and generating $22bn. The 32m total visitor number represents a 2m increase on 2023. A body of work that deserves special attention in the context of dark tourism is critical memory studies. There are several studies in dark tourism that have addressed how memory comes to be expressed and known, but critical memory studies go a step further in opening up a wide spectrum of new approaches to memory in culture besides addressing issues of relevance such as race and trauma.
