Have the hard conversation today, so that they can have a better tomorrow. It’s natural that as we move into our older years, we need extra support to live safe, happy and contented lives. For most elderly people, talking to family about their future is often fraught with difficulty. Discussing where we might live and how we will be cared for forces us to confront complex emotions. Often people avoid discussing the matter altogether. If you have an elderly parent who may soon need care, or you are concerned that they have unmet care needs now, having the conversation about long-term care needs is not always easy. As tough as the conversation may be, it’s important to talk to your elderly parents sooner rather than later so they understand and before you find yourself in a crisis. https://lnkd.in/ezZw5XQ8 A few points here that I thought are worth noting. One is that Charles Darwin apparently not only felt that Fitness is required for survival, but, also good Parenting. Somehow the latter attribution got lost along the way. Secondly, caregiving is neither an extreme burden or a total pleasure, but it has been overlooked. One last point is that caregivers need support and are often isolated in this isolated world in which we live. Whether you are a parent, or caregiver to your parents or another adult, you shouldn't have to go It alone. Yes, I believe that caregiving can be enriching, but only under the proper conditions. if you feel the same way, then take heed because the likelihood is that you will be a caregiver at some point in some way. So you ask what you can do and there are some suggestions here; and, I would add that we need to do something as a culture. Support your legislators who support your support. Visiting your shared loved one isn't just a chance to catch up, it's also an opportunity to give caregivers a much-needed break. Oftentimes, a primary family member is responsible for the day to day care of their loved one due to geographic or family reasons. There is an element of responsibility of the role can take a bit of a toll on the caregiver, who sacrifices time for their own interests, rest time, and time with their own family. It’s this element they need a break from and it doesn’t mean they love less. As a visiting family member, you can relieve them of their duties and encourage them to be guilt-free about taking the break.
