The challenges are multifaceted, ranging from a lack of awareness and skilled professionals to inadequate regulatory frameworks. However, these challenges present an opportunity for #Africa to leapfrog into advanced cybersecurity strategies. Initiatives like the African Union's Convention on Cyber Security and Personal Data Protection are steps in the right direction, aiming to harmonize cybersecurity laws across the continent. Investment in #education and training is paramount to build a robust cybersecurity workforce. Collaborations between educational institutions, private sector, and governments can foster an environment that nurtures talent and innovation in this field. Moreover, adopting best practices from global standards while tailoring solutions to local contexts will be key. Looking ahead, the future of cybersecurity in Africa is promising. With concerted efforts towards capacity building, policy development, and cross-border cooperation, Africa can secure its digital ecosystem. This will not only protect against threats but also instill confidence in the global community, positioning Africa as a safe and dynamic participant in the global digital economy. Galia Nurko, on behalf of GCA, just explained in Brussels #ECA24 how the recent conference in Ghana #GC3B adds momentum and pressure for development actors to embed cybersecurity considerations into their programming. She highlighted that conferences like these help add to the conversation, while other concrete actions must be taken, including demystifying cybersecurity for international development professionals who do not exclusively focus on digitalization, given that technology is now pervasive in advancing development outcomes. 🌲 For instance, working closely with experts in agriculture or education to help them understand the importance of risk mitigation when using technology to advance their goals. As concrete actions, 💡 Galia recommended inviting the non-governmental organizations and private companies that implement international development projects to these conversations, as well as having the cybersecurity community attend international development focused convenings. 🤝 Personal connections make a huge difference, and so does repetition in the messaging: "We need to convince people working in International development that cybersecurity needs to be addressed in all international development investments. Africa's cyber resilience is being tested which calls for more cyber awareness campaigns on basic cyber hygiene to the public, more budget allocation to reinforce the cyber security infrastructure and more training and placement opportunities for cyber security professionals. #CybersecurityInAfrica

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has committed to training 25,000 young people in Africa in the field of cybersecurity. This initiative aims to enhance digital skills and online security among African youth while promoting their employability in the rapidly growing technology sector. The UNDP is collaborating with the Give1 Project Digital Skills Academy to deliver this training. The program covers various topics, including artificial intelligence, data protection, and network security. It combines theoretical courses with practical workshops to provide a comprehensive learning experience. This initiative is part of UNDP's broader efforts to drive innovation and enhance youth employability in the region. The program aims to bridge the digital divide and equip African youth for opportunities in the digital economy. By targeting cybersecurity, the UNDP addresses a crucial need in Africa's digital landscape. A recent Eurobarometer survey highlights a growing shortage of cyber skills in the EU, underlining the need to train more cybersecurity specialists and more security-aware business staff. A report from the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) links this shortage to the increase in cyber threats, which pose a serious risk to network systems and the single market. The overall responses put into being by the European Commission show a comprehensive and forward-thinking strategy to: 1️⃣enhance cybersecurity skills 2️⃣promote gender inclusion, as an intrinsic part of the strategy (where the community of #Women4Cyber plays an important role) 3️⃣ensure continuous investment in training. Each of the above points should be faced with an holistic approach, as they are deeply interconnected. The Commission's strategy to boost investment in education, training and skills development could be further strengthened with the support of the European Investment Bank (EIB) and its experts who provide a wide range of advisory services to support the preparation and deployment of projects fostering investments in human capital.
