Some important points you need to consider when you are planning your building project. YOUR BUILDING FOUNDATION. 7 stages we don’t joke about. No 8 is the most important!! 1. Soil investigation: Conduct a thorough soil investigation to understand the soil conditions and determine the appropriate foundation design for the specific location in Nigeria. 2. Proper site preparation: Clear the site of any vegetation, debris, or loose soil before starting the foundation construction. This ensures a stable base for the foundation. 3. Adequate depth: Ensure that the foundation is dug to the appropriate depth to reach stable soil layers. This helps prevent settlement and ensures the stability of the structure. 4. Quality materials: Use high-quality materials, such as concrete and reinforcement bars, for the foundation construction. This ensures durability and strength. 5. Proper reinforcement: Install the necessary reinforcement bars according to the structural requirements. This helps distribute the load evenly and enhances the foundation's strength. 6. Waterproofing: Incorporate proper waterproofing measures to protect the foundation from water damage. This is especially important in areas with high groundwater levels. 7. Regular inspections: Conduct regular inspections during the foundation construction process to ensure that it meets the required standards and specifications. 8. Engage professionals: Work with experienced engineers, architects, and contractors who have a good understanding of local building practices and regulations in Nigeria. Remember, foundations are the backbone of any structure, so it's crucial to ensure their quality and stability. #builder #trends #viral #contemporyhomes #construction #realestate

We attended the 2024 Construction and Real Estate event hosted by the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC). The theme ‘Stemming the Tide of Building Collapse Incidents: From Rhetoric to Action’ was a powerful reminder of the need for real change in Nigeria’s construction industry. The speakers shed light on the alarming frequency of building collapses in Nigeria. Causes ranged from overlooking the need for certified professionals to bypassing government-approved building standards. As stakeholders in this industry, we all have a responsibility to prioritize safety, accountability, and compliance to ensure lives and assets are protected. It’s time for us to turn words into action and build a safer Nigeria.

The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria - CORBON is mandated to encourage the standardization and improvement of construction techniques and materials, provide, promote, review and co-ordinate training programs for skilled construction workers and construction site supervisors, accredit and register contractors and regulate their professional undertakings, accredit and certify skilled construction workers and construction site supervisors, develop and publish a code of conduct for the construction industry.(GOK, 2011). The question now is, how much is the government engaging them to get this done in the society. The government mostly wait for a building collapse before they remember they exist.

In one of the groups where I asked people to recall some of what I have been preaching to them, which I tag “WOli the Great Builder, once said,” Someone remembered this particular one: “The best time to correct a mistake is when you see it.” I was so impressed with the many comments from people on that day. It means that I am truly making an impact. I would like to lay more emphasis on this point. You don’t cover errors or mistakes in construction or engineering work. You should expose any errors or mistakes immediately to avoid costly repairs. The best thing to do is to avoid errors altogether, but the second-best approach is to correct them as soon as you identify them. Continuing work on an error-prone base is equivalent to compiling errors for future demolition. A building that is not square during the setting out will not be square during the block setting unless you correct it. Once you identify any error on your site, please expose it for immediate correction. Take responsibility for it and never try to repeat the same mistake. Immediately you discover that you are on the wrong path, get off at the nearest stop; the longer it takes you to get off, the more expensive the return trip will be. Don’t be misguided by continuing to build on a faulty foundation to save on the total cost of demolition. Take this as part of my construction wisdom message. May we always have the mindset and boldness to do what is right at all times. I am WOli the Great Builder, Nigeria's No. 1 real construction practical trainer and award-winning most influential young construction engineer 2023. Engr (DR) A.S Yunusa Engr.
