Promising insights: several highly regarded studies have recently provided new evidence on the link between hearing health and cognitive health. The ACHIEVE study by the Johns Hopkins University, investigated whether hearing intervention reduces cognitive decline in older adults with hearing loss. They found that hearing intervention slowed down loss of thinking and memory abilities by 48% over 3 years. The ENHANCE study by Professor Julia Sarant from the University of Melbourne, came to a similar result: hearing aid users could maintain their cognitive abilities over 3 years, whereas the participants without hearing intervention showed a decline in cognitive functions over the same time. Her conclusion: referral for hearing screening & rehabilitation may assist with delaying cognitive decline in older adults. #HearingLoss #Dementia

Hearing loss can be so gradual that it may be hard to notice at first. Annual hearing testing will help those with hearing loss gain a quicker understanding of their hearing ability and take action before symptoms worsen. It is the position of the International Hearing Society that by age 21, all adults should have undergone a hearing evaluation. Thereafter, a hearing evaluation should occur every 3 years or as needed based upon: - Decrease in quality of life - Change in health status - Onset or change of tinnitus - Change in hearing - Change in balance - Onset of or change in vertigo or dizziness - Head trauma or related injuries - Introduction of or change in ototoxic medications - Professional referral Test Your Hearing Health with a Hearing Aid Specialist. Interesting results of a study This study was a longitudinally designed one that was about older adults’ experiences with a new hearing aid during the first 6 months after fitting. The experiences and issues with hearing aid use among 181 hearing aid recipients (≥60 years) have been assessed at a six-month follow-up. Results indicates that the most common issues are the earmold (26.5%), sound quality (26.0%) and handling (25.5%). Thus, a hearing aid with both good sound quality and a good earmold is critically necessary for older patient with hearing loss. Also, don't forget that she/he is able to handle it very easily! In our recent survey of 2,000 people we found that… 1 in 2 know someone who needs a hearing test 1 in 5 took action after realising they needed a hearing test 1 in 4 became defensive, offended or upset when loved ones raised concerns over their hearing Despite huge advances in both hearing health awareness and technology in recent years, these statistics show that there are still big barriers we need to overcome to reduce hearing loss stigma. With over 1 billion young adults at risk, it is critical we start to normalise conversations about hearing loss with our loved ones. By making our hearing as routine as our sight and dental checks-ups, we can help break the stigma and empower people to live well for longer. Could you benefit from getting your hearing checked? Early hearing checks for school children are very important. They help to identify hearing problems early, which can make learning easier and improve speech development. Children who hear well can focus better in class and interact more with their peers. Regular hearing tests can catch issues before they become bigger problems. Early detection means children can get the support they need, such as hearing aids or therapy, which helps them succeed in school and everyday life. Parents and teachers can also understand and support the child's needs better. Make sure your child has a hearing check today. For expert advice, video consult our doctors at HelloGP.
