Have you heard of this new measure that many restaurants in India are taking, charging customers a deposit for table reservations? Say whaaaat?? Well actually, as a restauranteur myself, I do understand where they are coming from, and if you really think about it, I’m sure you would too These restaurants are trying to hold customers accountable for showing up for the reservations by charging a nominal deposit, which will later be adjusted with their total bill. Think of it in the same way that you would train or movie tickets, where you are paying in advance to reserve a seat. I do understand that as a customer, it can seem like the restaurant is being unreasonable, and almost arrogant, but behind this seemingly strict rule, there is a morsel of reason. The sheer number of reservations that turn into no-shows will surprise you, and even more common is when a reservation is made for 10 people, and only 5 show up. And in other cases, a reservation is made for 8 pm but by the time everyone shows up, it’s closer to 9. People often tend to forget that a restaurant is a business, after all. While these may seem like tiny inconveniences from the outside, restauranteurs know that this can affect revenue, capacity, workflow, and even the reputation of the restaurant if large tables look unoccupied at rush hour because the diners are running late! Not to mention, a table reserved for a no-show could have been given to someone who walked in without a reservation. So the next time you make a reservation at a restaurant, please try to be on time, and if there are any changes to the number of people or the time of the reservation, please let us know in advance. And, for the love of god, if the restaurant calls you when you are running late, please pick up! We promise we won’t bite 😅 I guess the point of writing this post is just to start the conversation, and help people understand where we are coming from, as restauranteurs.
