A recent survey found that those in hiring positions and those looking for jobs both agree that mentorship programs are an attractive employment feature. Under a traditional mentorship program, experienced employees are partnered with new hires or less experienced staff members in collaborative arrangements that involve teaching sessions, discussions, special projects and assessments. Each mentorship should have clear objectives and performance metrics. Done right, mentorship programs can reduce “brain drain,” encourage diversity, create an atmosphere of continuous learning and improvement, and help with hiring and retention.
