Through our t-shirt campaign, we raised $75,000 for the Canadian Red Cross to support wildfire relief efforts. It wasn’t just about the shirts. It was about how we structured it—leveraging a unique pre-order strategy that turned community support into a real force for good. Community impact? The primary impact of this firms business model increases homelessness (currently at 10K+ homeless people on any given night) by gentrifying neighborhoods and forcing people who make less money out. "Global day for people and planet" yet the firm musters up 2 small bins of mostly dog and cat food...this doesn't even align. How about taking on projects that actually help to reduce the number of homeless people in the city instead of ones that are for the affluent population and for corporations to profit from. I hope other architecture studios in Toronto can learn from these fake displays of positive community impact. Many studios like this promote themselves as doing good but really at a foundational socio-economic level, they drive some of the biggest problems in the city. #thinkcritically #communityimpact #torontohomeless

I LOVE food rescue. To me it's a perfect business solution to 3 problems. 😠 Hunger. I hate being hungry. No one should be hungry. 🗑 Waste. Throwing useful stuff away infuriates me (especially with food, which takes a ton of effort to produce in the first place!). ⛽ Energy. Food is fuel. If the whole community is fueled with the right kind of energy...imagine how much better off we all would be. That's why I love it when teams like The Open Door and Second Harvest Heartland connect food to families. What's one of your favorite business solutions that solves multiple problems at once?

🚨#AllHatAndNoCattle OR #AllFurCoatAndNoKnickers🧥 (Post 3 of 5 - search #FireDrillFundraising to see previous posts) Fire drill fundraising is an appeal that is high on urgency and emotion with little to no substance. My heart sinks when I see charity leaders resort to the tactic because it erodes trust and relationships with givers. Are there times it is necessary? Sure, but you need to infuse credibility into the invitation. If you don’t, you risk getting labeled “all hat and no cattle” by my Texas friends…or “all fur coat and no knickers” by my UK friends (thanks Michelle Benson 🙂). And spoiler alert: neither of those is a sustainable fundraising strategy. Reflection #3 on fire drill fundraising: When we are always “in crisis”, we set an expectation that does not align with reality. We all know the furniture store in town who claims to be going out of business every November (In the USA it's right before Black Friday, conveniently). Emotional appeals are like salt. A little goes a long way. Too much spoils the feast. If your organizational identity is built around crisis, you’re pouring on too much salt. You should seek, instead, to build your identity around impact. You want givers to respond with favor and excitement to your mission rather than keeping them in a perpetual urgency loop. #majorgifts #impact #vision #mission #sustainableimpact #fundraising
